Trump demands Omar resign
US President Donald Trump called for Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s resignation from Congress, accusing her of using a false name when she was sworn into office.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “Because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress,” and he urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to recognize that her seat had been vacated.
Trump claimed the Minnesota lawmaker’s real name was Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and he said it shares a surname with her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
A Justice Department court filing tied to a federal search of Omar’s Washington, DC home identified her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” and the filing did not establish that Omar committed fraud.
Omar’s spokesperson told Fox News, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” after federal agents searched Omar’s home on Oct. 12 as part of an investigation into possible false statements in immigration and citizenship records.

Court filing and denied fraud
The federal court filing referenced by prosecutors described Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” and it was submitted in connection with efforts to keep materials sealed related to a federal search warrant for Omar’s Washington, DC-area home.
Trump seized on the filing during a campaign rally in Iowa, and he said, “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar,” while posting that she had “openly admitted to FRAUD.”
Omar’s office rejected the accusation and told Fox News Digital, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” while Omar said she was “Not to my knowledge” when asked whether she was related to Elmi.
The Hill reported that Omar told MS NOW’s Chris Hayes she was “confident” she had done nothing wrong, and she said she would have to move out of her D.C. apartment because of threats after the federal search.
The Hill also quoted Jeanine Pirro saying, “If you have citizenship in this country, your derivative citizenship, or your naturalization, your application, will turn on precise information,” as she questioned whether Omar followed laws tied to naturalization and immigration.
Investigation, elections, and pressure
Federal agents searched Omar’s home on Oct. 12, and the investigation focused on possible false statements in immigration and citizenship records tied to Omar and her family.
Arab News said the federal investigation was looking into how Omar obtained US citizenship and whether she or her late father misrepresented her age on immigration documents, while it noted that federal agents seized her phone, computers, passport and other documents.
The Hill reported that Omar told Chris Hayes she was “confident” she had done nothing wrong and described the search as part of a “campaign of political intimidation” she said the president had waged against her.
Trump continued to press for removal, and he told rally-goers, “If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain,” as chants of “Lock her up” rose in Iowa.
The Hill also said the Democratic lawmaker accused the president of using federal power to intimidate her ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, while Omar’s office maintained the allegations were false.
