DoorDash unveiled a purpose-built six-rotor autonomous drone at Dash Forward 2026. It plans an end-to-end DoorDash Air system with ground loading, routing, and delivery orchestration.

8 outlets told this the same way.
DoorDash Air, built from logistics
DoorDash unveiled a six-rotor drone at its Dash Forward 2026 annual event as part of its DoorDash Air aerial delivery strategy, and the company said it began by focusing on ground logistics before developing the aircraft. DoorDash Labs, the research and development team that created its autonomous delivery robot named Dot, was responsible for creating the drone delivery service and the Autonomous Delivery Platform, or ADP, which coordinates deliveries between humans, delivery robots, and now, drones.
DoorDash said its ADP uses smart routing that takes into account factors such as weather, flight range, and ground traffic to determine which orders are viable for air shipping. DoorDash said it sized the entire DoorDash Air system based on historical order data, including order weight and the distance orders typically travel, and it said more than 500,000 restaurants are present in its delivery market.

ADP decides which orders fly
DoorDash said it built DoorDash Air around the “first and last ten feet” of delivery, meaning picking up an order from a merchant’s kitchen and landing it safely on a consumer’s doorstep.
Harrison Shih, Head of DoorDash Air, said, “We didn’t start with a drone and ask what would fit. We started with what people order and how local businesses actually operate, then built the entire system from there,” as DoorDash described a system designed around real order data.

DoorDash said its aircraft uses six slow-spinning propellers mounted at the ends of its arms and includes a winch to pick up, transport, and deliver packages.
DoorDash said it plans to start pilot deliveries in Northern California with partners including Chipotle and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and it also named Momo N Curry among the first partners to sign on for DoorDash Air.
FAA Part 135 and early pilots
DoorDash said it announced in July its plans to launch the drone delivery service after receiving FAA Part 135 Air Operator Certification, which it said allows legally operating a commercial drone delivery service in the United States. DoorDash said the drone delivery service is designed to coordinate deliveries between humans, sidewalk robots, and drones, and it said the ADP platform handles coordination challenges across those delivery modes.
DoorDash said the company’s strategy for DoorDash Air is based on its extensive experience accumulated over 13 years of user data from both merchants and customers, and it said it used that data to design the aircraft and drone packaging around constraints that come with flying. DoorDash said it expects early-stage pilot deliveries to begin in Northern California, and it said consumers in the service area will be able to order drone delivery from national favorites and local mom-and-pop shops alike.
