Emergency Lawyers said the strike hit the main market in Abu Zaeima and warned that the death toll could rise, as aerial attacks continued to intensify in Sudan’s ongoing war.

Dabanga Radio TV Online put the weekend toll higher, saying at least 15 civilians were killed and dozens more injured in drone attacks on villages and a market in North Kordofan, with a separate drone strike on a fuel station in El Obeid leaving one person dead.

Blick reported a different figure, saying at least 28 people were killed on Sunday in a drone strike on a market in North Kordofan, citing an Emergency Lawyers statement that described “28 deaths and dozens of injuries.”

The attacks were described as part of a pattern, with Emergency Lawyers saying the market strike came less than 24 hours after similar drone attacks hit nearby villages and a civilian vehicle.

No claims, rising toll

Emergency Lawyers did not identify who carried out the attack, and neither the Sudanese army nor the RSF has claimed responsibility, according to ShiaWaves.

Al Jazeera Net similarly said Emergency Lawyers did not attribute the attack to any party in the war, and there was no immediate comment from the Sudanese army or the RSF about it.

Witnesses and medical sources described additional strikes the same day, with ShiaWaves reporting that another drone struck a fuel station later the same day in el-Obeid, where medical sources said four wounded civilians were taken to hospital.

Dabanga Radio TV Online reported that a day earlier drones attacked villages near Abu Zaima, killing at least two civilians and injuring five others, and said three of the wounded were in critical condition.

The rights group also framed the attacks as a violation of international humanitarian law, quoting Emergency Lawyers warning that “The repeated targeting of civilians, villages and civilian means of transport reveals a blatant disregard for the lives of the population.”

Wider war stakes

The drone attacks in Kordofan were reported alongside broader displacement and civilian harm figures, with ShiaWaves saying the United Nations reported at least 880 civilians were killed in drone strikes across the country between January and April.

ShiaWaves also said the war, now in its fourth year, has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 13 million people, creating what the UN describes as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises.

In a separate report, Anadolu Ajansı said the death toll from drone strikes on a market and a displaced persons camp in the Kordofan region had risen to 59 dead, citing Sudanese media.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that on Monday an air strike hit a building housing a veterinary unit where displaced civilians had taken refuge in the city of Al-Sunut in West Kordofan, with Al-Rakoba citing medical sources that at least 28 people, including women and children, were killed.

Emergency Lawyers condemned attacks on markets and civilian infrastructure as a violation of international humanitarian law and called on the warring parties in Sudan to protect civilians and de-escalate the fighting, according to Anadolu Ajansı.
