Carse handcuffed in Derby
England fast bowler Brydon Carse became the latest England cricketer tied to a late-night incident after footage showed him in police handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night.
“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating”
The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed it is investigating, saying, “We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating,” and adding, “We will provide a further update when possible.”

The incident came after Durham, the Division Two leaders, completed a three-day thrashing of Derbyshire in the County Championship on Saturday, with Matthew Potts and Ben Stokes also briefly visible in the footage.
Carse, who was released to play for Durham after missing the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, was set to be in the squad for the second Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday.
The ECB statement also placed the episode in the context of a wider run of off-field scrutiny for England, including Joe Root’s call for players to be “really good role models, good human beings.”
ECB probe and squad status
Multiple outlets framed the same video as a police handcuffing outside a club in Derby, with Sportstar saying videos circulating on social media on Sunday appeared to show Carse “in handcuffs and being led away from a club by police officers.”
The Independent reported that Carse was “released without charge,” while Cricbuzz said it was “not clear what led to the incident or why Carse was placed in handcuffs.”
Cricbuzz also said Carse remains part of England’s squad for the second Test at Lord’s, which begins on Thursday, even as the ECB investigation continues.
Sky Sports reported that Carse was briefly detained but “was not arrested,” and that the ECB was investigating after footage emerged showing the bowler handcuffed by police outside a Derby nightclub.
In the background of the footage, The Independent said Ben Stokes was seen towards the back of the video, while Matthew Potts was also visible talking to Carse as four police officers surrounded him.
Alcohol scrutiny and next steps
The incident landed amid renewed scrutiny of England’s approach to alcohol and player conduct, with The Guardian pointing to a “spate of bad publicity off the field for England” and referencing the winter tour of Australia.
“shortly after an alcohol-related nightclub incident in London involving him and Gus Atkinson”
Cricbuzz linked the Carse probe to earlier alcohol-related fallout, noting that Stokes retired from international cricket in June “shortly after an alcohol-related nightclub incident in London involving him and Gus Atkinson.”
Cricbuzz also said Stokes and Gus Atkinson were left out of England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand while the ECB reviewed its alcohol policy, and that Stokes later returned to lead in the third and final Test before announcing his retirement midway.
The Guardian added that Carse was England’s leading wicket-taker during the Ashes series but injury kept him on the sidelines this season, and that he was picked in the super-sized squad for the Headingley Test against Pakistan before being released to play for Durham.
With the second Test at Lord’s beginning on Thursday and the team assembling in London on Monday, the ECB’s investigation is positioned as the immediate pressure point for Carse’s availability and England’s off-field narrative heading into the match.
