Howe exits Newcastle
Eddie Howe has left Newcastle United after losing control of transfers, with the German coach Matthias Jaissle set to replace him as Newcastle’s negotiations with Jaissle were described as at an advanced stage on Thursday morning.

The Guardian said Howe’s departure followed a Wednesday night 4-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Bristol City, and Howe told reporters, "Every day as Newcastle manager is a great day for me."
Reuters-style figures in the coverage put Howe’s Newcastle tenure at 231 matches across all competitions, with FotMob reporting that Howe joined Newcastle in November 2021 and oversaw 231 matches.
FotMob added that Newcastle’s 2025-26 campaign ended with the club finishing 12th in the top-flight and losing 17 league matches, its most across a single Premier League campaign since 2017-18.
Shearer fears what next
Alan Shearer, Newcastle’s all-time top scorer, said he was fearing the worst for his old club as rumours around Howe’s future at St. James’ Park emerged, and he warned that "I think we have to get ready for a tough season and some very challenging times ahead."
Shearer also said in his BBC Sport column, "Whatever the reasons are for him leaving the club, I think every supporter of my age or younger – and I am 55 – would say the same."
The Guardian framed the managerial change as “amicable” and said Howe had told Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian owners he wanted to leave more than a fortnight ago, while also noting that Howe’s position had been uncertain for some time.
FotMob reported that Howe’s timing was the biggest surprise, adding that it came “three weeks into pre-season” with “only three weeks to go until the Premier League starts again,” as Shearer questioned what had happened behind the scenes.
Guimarães and the rebuild
The coverage tied the stakes of the transition to Newcastle’s transfer churn, with The Guardian saying Howe admitted he had “lost control” of transfers and did not know if Bruno Guimarães would board the team’s flight to south-east Spain before a training Camp at La Manga.

The Guardian also said Newcastle’s sporting director Ross Wilson believes the club’s approach is the best way to remain within football’s spending rules under a Uefa settlement agreement, while noting that Wilson recruited four players aged 20 or under in Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Touré, Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur.
FotMob reported that Anthony Gordon has joined Barcelona and Sandro Tonali has signed for Tottenham, while it said Bruno Guimaraes appears to be heading to Arsenal and that Shearer expected Guimarães could be “next to leave.”
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie said Howe’s departure was not driven by the friendly defeat to Fulham, and described the decision as made by Howe himself after nearly five years, with Newcastle accepting it was time for a change and asking him to stay on until a replacement was in situ.
