Ellis raises $10M seed

Ellis AI, a New York-based provider of an AI-native operations platform for private credit, emerged from stealth and announced raising $10M seed funding on Thursday. TechCrunch said the $10 million round included investors such as First Round Capital, 645 Ventures, Harlem Capital, Khosla Ventures, Thrive Capital, Slow Capital, Kearny Jackson, and Ariel Alternatives CEO Mellody Hobson.

The company’s platform is designed to unify disconnected outputs from fund administrators, ledgers, loan management systems, banking data, legal documents, and spreadsheets into a single solution, using AI agents to automate recurring workflows. TechCrunch described Ellis as being founded by Ryan Williams, who co-created the real estate investment platform Cadre alongside Josh and Jared Kushner in 2014, and said Cadre raised more than $160 million and was valued at $800 million at its peak before being sold to Yieldstreet in 2024 for an undisclosed sum.

AI agents for reconciliation

Ellis said it uses AI agents to tackle fragmented workflows by managing documents, spreadsheets, and correspondence, and by flagging discrepancies in the data. TechCrunch quoted Ryan Williams saying, "A team may have to download files from several systems, reformat the data, compare balances, investigate discrepancies, and re-enter information by hand."

TechCrunch also reported Williams’s emphasis that Ellis connects to the systems and documents a firm already uses rather than forcing a full overhaul, and that it keeps a human in the loop. Forbes added that at Cadre, Williams said he could not think of a quarter when the team finished closing the books and getting to the right values on time, and that Ellis uses AI to aggregate different sources of data into a coherent perspective.

Targeting small managers

Ellis’s launch materials described a private credit operations problem in which critical processes run across disconnected fund administrator reports, general ledgers, loan servicing systems, bank data, legal documents, and spreadsheets, delaying fund closes and investor reporting while increasing operational risk. Alternative Credit Investor said Ellis is designed to create a single, reconciled and source-verifiable data foundation across those systems and documents, with specialist AI agents supporting fund closing, limited partner reporting, portfolio monitoring and compliance processes.

“Ellis describes itself as the first AI-native operations platform designed specifically for the private credit market.”

Forbes reported that Ellis is initially targeting small private credit shops with up to 20 employees and funds ranging from $100 million to $1 billion in assets, and that Williams said four thousand firms this size exist and control about one-third of the $2.5 trillion global private credit market. Forbes also framed the timing around heightened scrutiny in the private credit industry and quoted Williams saying, "There's a lot more scrutiny on how every number and every valuation is coming to bear when you're seeing more defaults than ever."
