Heat wave hits NYC
New York City and the Tri-State area are under an extreme heat warning starting Wednesday, with officials warning it will likely feel like 90-100 degrees this week and that the heat is expected to increase Wednesday and Thursday.
“An extreme heat warning has been issued starting Wednesday NEW YORK (WABC) --A dangerous heat wave is expected to bring prolonged extreme heat to New York City and the Tri-State area this week”
NBC New York said actual temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday, while humidity will push “feels like” temps into the 105-110 range or higher.

Gothamist reported the National Weather Service expects temperatures in the mid- to high-90s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with temperatures potentially reaching as high as 105 degrees on Friday in some parts of the city.
New York Magazine said the region is under a heat advisory through Saturday and that temperatures could linger into Saturday, July 4, with high humidity pushing heat indices in the 105 to 110 degree range for the city and much of the surrounding region.
City response and warnings
New York City is coordinating a response as the forecast becomes clearer, with Gothamist describing the city activating hundreds of cooling centers across the five boroughs on high heat days.
Gothamist quoted Office of Emergency Management spokesperson Alexia Nizhny saying, “We're making sure staff and volunteers working these events have the resources they need to stay safe in the heat,” including water and reminders to take frequent indoor breaks.

New York Magazine reported that Mayor Zohran Mamdani told New Yorkers to identify a safe, air-conditioned place and said, “Beginning Wednesday, the City will activate hundreds of free locations across the city,” while also announcing 15 Cooling Outreach On-Location vans or COOL vans.
ABC7 New York said Newark is activating a Code Red from 8 a.m. Wednesday through 8 a.m. Sunday as temperatures are expected to reach over 100 degrees, and it urged residents to text "Path Home" to 855-11 for non-emergency assistance.
Stakes: health, power, and plans
Officials warned that extreme heat is considered the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S., and ABC7 New York urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and seek air conditioning or shade.
“New York City this week is staring down its first heat wave of the summer, defined by three or more consecutive days of temperatures reaching or exceeding 90 degrees”
Gothamist said city data shows there’s been an average of seven “heat-stress” deaths caused directly by heat every year for the last decade, and it added that a June heatwave last year killed 19 people.
New York Post reported that electricity demands are expected to hit near-record levels and said real-feel temperatures will hover between 105 and 110 degrees in the afternoons, while AccuWeather’s Dan DePodwin told the paper, “It’s going to be a very intense heat wave.”
Fox News said Mayor Zohran Mamdani activated a heat emergency plan that includes using more than a dozen mobile units called COOL vans to check on vulnerable people and provide medical care, water, and supplies, and it quoted him saying, “We need every New Yorker to take this deadly heat seriously.”
