In New Jersey, ABC7 said about 180.000 homes were without electricity after a strong storm damaged infrastructure, including the NJ Transit rail network, which then suffered service interruptions due to fallen trees and downed cables.

The National Weather Service also warned of heat index values and storm threats, with the Centro de Predicción de Tormentas raising the risk of severe thunderstorms for parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday and for the Central and Southern High Plains through the morning of Sunday.

Officials urge precautions

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill posted on X: "Please be cautious of the extreme heat," urging residents to "Limit your time outdoors" and "drink plenty of water."

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger also warned on X that "The extreme heat we are feeling in Virginia is not letting up this weekend," and told residents to take precautions so first responders and health care professionals could enjoy July 4.

In Washington, D.C., the annual Independence Day Parade was canceled due to the heat, and Mayor Muriel Bowser posted on X that it would be “a very long, busy, hot day in DC.”

The National Weather Service forecast temperatures topping 100 from North Carolina to Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and said dangerously hot conditions could persist, while AccuWeather reported the District could reach 101 degrees.

The U.S. National Weather Service and NOAA guidance cited in USA Today also put heat index values in the 105-115 range across much of the Mid-South, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with New Jersey and parts of New York including Manhattan expected to see 105 to 110.

The heat wave threatened power grids and travel plans as CNBC reported that temperatures of up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit were expected and that the conditions could increase the risk of heat-related illness for vulnerable populations.

PJM, described by CNBC as the largest U.S. power grid operator, said on Friday afternoon it was under a federal alert to cut electricity consumption across its territory, which covers tens of millions of people in the Mid-Atlantic, South and Washington, D.C.

CNBC also tied the heat to electricity demand for air conditioning and said wholesale spot electricity prices jumped more than 243% in New England and 101% in New York City on Thursday, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Meanwhile, FOX Weather said severe thunderstorms could disrupt nighttime fireworks celebrations with damaging wind gusts and heavy rain, and noted NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center issued a level 3 severe storm threat across the Mid-Atlantic including Washington, D.C.

As the heat eased in some areas, FOX Weather said the severe weather threat would linger into Sunday afternoon and evening across parts of the Mid-Atlantic, with a Level 2 out of 5 threat and a Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk in place for parts of southern Pennsylvania, the Delmarva and the Philadelphia area on Monday.
