Gaza civil defense crews recovered the bodies and remains of 55 Palestinians from beneath the rubble of a house belonging to the Malaka family in Gaza City’s az‑Zeitoun neighborhood on Saturday, after the house had been bombed by the Israeli occupation army nearly two years ago.

ABNA English said rescue teams worked for a third consecutive day searching through the building’s rubble for the remains of over 60 victims, and it said civil defense teams managed to recover most of the bodies from under the rubble while completing a major part of the recovery operation.
Al Jazeera reported that the recovery operation concluded on Saturday and that the remains were found beneath the rubble of the Malka family home, with Colonel Muhammad Abu Dan supervising the teams as they searched for more than 60 bodies over the past 72 hours.A
Al Jazeera also said the Israeli forces struck the building on November 19, 2023, as the family members sought shelter inside after being displaced from their own homes over the course of Israel’s genocidal war, and it added that a joint funeral procession is expected to take place next weekend.A
Manual recovery, no machinery
Al Jazeera described the recovery as a slow, largely manual campaign to retrieve the dead from beneath Gaza’s ruins, saying such efforts are hampered by a chronic shortage of the heavy machinery needed to clear broken concrete.A
ABNA English said civil defense crews face major difficulties in recovery operations due to a severe shortage of equipment and heavy machinery, and it reported that the Palestinian civil defense issued an urgent appeal to international humanitarian organizations to intervene and supply heavy machinery, including modern extraction equipment, pumps, and bulldozers.
Al Jazeera added that Abu Dan called on international humanitarian organisations to provide as much equipment as possible so that his teams can recover the largest number of people possible from the rubble.A
The same Al Jazeera report said Gaza’s Ministry of Health, along with UN agencies and aid organisations, estimate that between 10,000 and 14,000 people remain missing under rubble across the territory.A
Funerals and wider missing
As the Malaka-family recovery neared completion, Al Jazeera said a joint funeral procession is expected to take place next weekend, while it also reported that hospitals in the strip received 17 bodies over the past 48 hours as well as 27 injured people, according to figures compiled from admissions.A

Anadolu Ajansı reported that Palestinians held a funeral procession on Sunday for 100 people recovered from under the rubble of destroyed homes in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, with the bodies and remains laid out near the ruins and draped in Palestinian flags.
Anadolu said the funeral included memorial addresses by Gaza’s Civil Defense and that the bodies and remains are expected to be buried at Al-Ahli cemetery in the Zeitoun neighborhood after funeral prayers.
Al Jazeera also placed the recovery within a broader accounting of the war, saying that since the “ceasefire” took hold last October, at least 1,344 people have been killed and 4,464 injured while at least 815 bodies have been recovered from the rubble, and that the overall death toll since October 2023 has risen to 73,470 with at least 174,540 injured.
