GM Struggles To Sell Chevrolet Silverado EV Despite 450-Mile Range
Key Takeaways
- Silverado EV sales around 14,000 units in the United States and Canada in 2026.
- Silverado EV's future uncertain as GM suspends the full-size electric-truck refresh.
- Industry reports indicate shrinking demand for U.S. electric pickups with Ford and RAM withdrawals.
Silverado EV sales lag
Chevrolet’s Silverado EV has arrived with specifications that include an EPA-estimated 450-mile range on a full charge, 510 horsepower, and 615 pounds-pie of torque, but sales have remained well below expectations in the United States and Canada.
“This very specific category of electric cars is no longer attracting customers”
Zamin.uz, citing Ixbt.com and Techcrunch.com, said General Motors sold only about 14,000 Silverado EVs in the US and Canada last year, described as ten times less than sales of traditional fuel-powered models.

Межа. Новини України. also tied the weak momentum to price and size concerns, saying GM sold about 14,000 units last year in the United States and Canada while the gasoline Silverado sold tens of times more in a single quarter.
The same report said the Silverado EV targets the premium pickup segment, with an average price around $66,000, an LT Extended Range version offering a 410-mile range, and an LT Max Range costing about $20,000 more and adding roughly 68 miles of additional range.
It added that GM has hinted at future battery updates—LMR (lithium-manganese-rich)—that could cut costs by about $6,000 without sacrificing range, potentially moving the vehicle toward price parity with gasoline versions.
Tech promises meet doubts
The Silverado EV’s appeal is framed as carlike handling and quiet comfort, with one source saying “you feel speed and comfort, closer to a passenger car than to a traditional pickup,” while also emphasizing that the range exceeds 400 miles on a single charge.
Zamin.uz described the cabin as spacious and said the noise insulation is at a high level, and it said the vehicle can travel over 400 miles on a single charge.

On driver-assistance, Zamin.uz said Super Cruise is a Level 2 autonomous driving system that allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel on highways, using Google Maps data to select routes and indicate where the autopilot can be used most effectively.
But it also pointed to practical tests, saying it “may be slightly sluggish in detecting cars that suddenly cut in from the side or trailers with dirty lights,” and it noted that General Motors’ decision to abandon Apple CarPlay in its new electric vehicles is being criticized by many users.
The same source connected the technology to broader hesitation, asking why the “technological marvel” did not become a hit with customers lining up to buy it, and listing factors including concerns about infrastructure and a lack of full trust in electric power.
Industry shifts and stakes
As GM’s Silverado EV struggles to translate its specifications into demand, other automakers are also reshaping their electric pickup strategies, with Caradisiac saying Stellantis canceled its electric Ram and Ford planned to replace the F-150 Lightning with a range-extender model.
“After Stellantis cancels its electric Ram, Ford will replace its F-150 Lightning with a range-extender model”
Caradisiac said Ford stated that the next generation would exceed “1,000 kilometers of maximum range (about 620 miles),” and it described a narrowing field where only Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian’s pickup, and General Motors models like Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV remain.
In parallel, L'annuel de l'automobile reported that GM decided to indefinitely suspend the refresh of its full-size electric truck and SUV lineup, leaving doubt about the fate of the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ beyond their current generation.
That same report said GM booked $7.6 billion in EV-related charges in 2025, including $6 billion in asset write-downs and project cancellations, and it cited Q4 2025 sales falling 43% after the removal of the federal $7,500 tax credit in the United States.
It also said GM’s Factory Zero plant, described as GM’s $2.2 billion electric flagship, laid off 1,300 workers after production stoppages, while producing expensive, low-volume vehicles in a market that remains hesitant.
