Ooze at National Mall

The Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C. faced fresh ridicule on Wednesday after a mock-up of the Triumphal Arch on the National Mall was spotted oozing as temperatures in the nation's capital climbed into the upper 90s ahead of the 250th birthday celebration.

The arch, described as a “Temu” replica of President Donald Trump’s proposed victory arch, appeared to be coming apart at the seams, with a yellow substance — thought to be polyurethane — seen wrinkling and separating from the structure's wooden frame.

In a video posted on X, the substance was seen seeping above Corinthian columns, and the underlying plywood model was described as warped by warm weather, leading the surface to stretch and peel.

The Independent said it reached out to Freedom 250, the group organizing the fair, for comment, while the Mirror US reported that organizers said the columns were “always planned” to be added to the arch.

Organizers push back

Freedom 250 organizers responded to the criticism by telling the Daily Beast that the arch was “just a replica,” adding, “maybe try celebrating the 250th anniversary and stop writing nonsense articles.”

The Mirror US also quoted a spokesperson saying, “Cover real news,” and added that the event organizers framed their message as “Journalism would showcase the Americans joining together. No American would want to invite this outlet to cover their birthday party. Happy 250!!!”

Attendees described the fairgrounds along the National Mall as vast, with one visitor telling DC News Now, “It looks plastic.”

Another attendee, Alicia, said she expected more, telling The Mirror US, “I mean, we just entered, but we come from Dallas, Texas, so it definitely seems a lot smaller.”

Heat, crowds, and claims

Separate from the arch controversy, an attendee at the Great American State Fair was forced to cool off in a baptism pool after “seeing stars” in extreme heat on the National Mall.

A Fox News anchor approached the couple and asked about how they were feeling, and Megan Nicoletti said, “But previously, none of these booths have air conditioning. We don't know what happened. But I started seeing stars.”

The Independent reported that after President Donald Trump opened the fair on June 24 with a campaign-style speech, he later boasted that the event was “packed to the brim” with “at least 45,000 people.”

The Independent also said NBC News estimated “more than 1,000” people turned out, while The Washington Post wrote the crowd was “smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings,” as the fair continued with setbacks including a power outage that melted ice cream.
