Donations diverted
House Democrats accused Trump-linked fundraisers of fraud over diverted donations tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, alleging that consultants “may have engaged in financial fraud” by tricking donors who wanted to support the bipartisan America250 organizer into sending money to a rival group, Freedom 250.
“Democrats accuse Trump-linked fundraisers of fraud over diverted donations for America's anniversary House Democrats allege consultants tied to President Donald Trump may have engaged in financial fraud related to the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations WASHINGTON -- Consultants tied to President Donald Trump may have engaged in financial fraud, tricking donors who wanted to support the nation’s bipartisan 250th anniversary organizer into sending their money instead to a rival group set up by his administration, according to a report released Thursday by House Democrats”
The Democratic report says donors intending to contribute to America250 were instead given the banking and routing numbers for Freedom 250, which the report describes as “a vehicle for a Christian nationalist, partisan, and Trump-centered vision of American identity,” and Freedom 250 denied the claims.

ABC News reported that Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez dismissed the Democrats’ report as “categorically false” and a “partisan smear from politicians who would rather manufacture division than celebrate a national milestone.”
The dispute also centers on federal funding, with ABC News stating that under a bill approved by Congress last year, $150 million in federal funds was allocated to the Interior Department for events celebrating the 250th anniversary, while America250 was expecting $100 million but had received only $25 million, according to the Democratic report.
Freedom 250 events
ABC News described Freedom 250 as a limited liability corporation created last fall as a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Park Foundation, with the report saying its sole employee appears to be CEO Keith Krach, who Democrats said traveled in January to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to solicit foreign government officials and business leaders for money.
The same ABC News account said Freedom 250 has focused on staging big events largely held in Washington, including the UFC cage fight at the White House on Trump’s 80th birthday, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, and an upcoming July 4 celebration featuring a Trump speech and a fireworks extravaganza the president is touting as the “show of a lifetime.”

France 24 framed the July 4 moment as arriving amid sharp political division, saying “Celebrations are expected across the country led by President Donald Trump,” while also citing a Reuters/Ipsos poll that “one in five Americans says they will not celebrate Independence Day this year.”
France 24 also reported that Freedom 250’s main event is the Great American State Fair, a two-week exhibition on the National Mall, and that Trump will deliver a speech at the fair on July 4, which has drawn criticism for trying to grab the spotlight of the celebration.
Identity and accountability
Beyond the fundraising allegations, the anniversary is portrayed as a fight over national identity, with El Mundo describing the United States reaching its 250th anniversary “wrapped in a crisis of self-esteem, identity, and irreconcilable visions,” and noting that the commemoration of the Declaration of Independence finds the country divided over the meaning of its own history.

El Mundo also quoted a Pew Research Center study saying “Most Americans believe that the country’s best days are behind,” and it said Americans have lost trust in institutions including the federal government, the two major political parties, traditional media, and universities.
In parallel, NPR reported that House Democrats accused Trump of “hijacking” America’s 250th birthday for his own gain, with Rep. Jared Huffman telling NPR, “We put it all together to really tell the story … of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests.”
NPR added that Huffman said the report is based on interviews with unnamed whistleblowers, sworn Congressional testimony, internal Freedom 250 documents and other written responses, while Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez denied the claims as “categorically false,” calling it a “partisan smear.”
