In Mokha, local sources reported hearing six violent explosions accompanied by drone activity, while residents said missiles were launched from mountainous positions near the Bin Laden resort in Ibb Governorate and that Houthi elements’ movements were observed near Al-Hamza camp.

In Marib city, local sources indicated the Houthi militia targeted residential areas and neighborhoods with missiles and drones, while precise information regarding the extent of damage or casualties was not yet available.

The spokesman for the Joint Forces, Brigadier General Wadah Al-Dubaish, stated that initial information suggests a booby-trapped drone originating from the Al-Houban area in Taiz Governorate exploded in a populated village within the Al-Brah axis, and he said the explosion caused fear and panic among residents even as the number of casualties or damages remained unclear.

Casualties and competing tolls

Arab News said the escalation came as the Yemeni army vowed to respond to Houthi drone and missile strikes on Mocha that killed seven people and wounded 30 others, and it added that a Houthi drone struck a position belonging to the Shabwa Defense Forces in Najd Margad, killing two soldiers and wounding several others.

Al Jazeera reported that Houthis launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on al-Makha (Mocha), killing at least seven more people less than 24 hours after earlier attacks killed at least 11, and it said Yemen’s armed forces stated four military personnel and three civilians were killed while 30 others were wounded.

Al Jazeera also said air defences intercepted and shot down 11 drones involved in the attack, and it reported that two ballistic missiles were reported to have fallen into the sea without hitting their targets.

In the same Al Jazeera account, Yemen’s armed forces said the latest missile and drone assault killed seven people and wounded 30 others, while it described the earlier barrage on Sunday as killing at least 11 people and wounding 32 others, citing AFP’s toll.

Retaliation and wider stakes

Arab News quoted a military official in Marib by telephone saying, "Army forces launched a strong artillery attack targeting enemy command and control centers, drone launch sites and missile platforms in Shabwa and Marib," after the renewed attacks on Mocha.

In Al Jazeera’s account, Yemen’s armed forces said the attacks targeted civilian facilities and infrastructure, residents’ homes, electricity-generating stations and other sites inside the city, as well as military positions, and it described the National Resistance Forces urging residents of al-Makha to remain indoors.

TRT World said the pro-government National Resistance Forces said 11 drones involved in the attack were downed, and it reported that Yemen’s army bombed the Al-Mahroor area northwest of Taiz city while artillery shelled Houthi gatherings on the Hameer front in Maqbanah and the Al Aqrud front in Sabir al-Masrah district.

Al Jazeera also reported that the Houthis said the operation involved a large number of ballistic missiles and drones and was launched in response to an alleged continued Saudi military buildup along Yemen’s western coast and in Taiz province, while it noted that Houthi political council member Hizam al-Assad claimed continuing explosions and smoke at the port were caused by weapons and military equipment stored there.
