Journalists killed at Shifa
On August 10, 2025, Israeli forces killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif and five colleagues in a targeted airstrike on a journalists’ tent near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
“The August 10, 2025, strike hit a tent used by journalists near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.”
The Siasat Daily said the strike hit a tent used by journalists near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and killed Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, photographers Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, and journalists Mo’men Aliwa and Mohammed Al-Khalidi.

Mondoweiss put the death toll for media personnel killed by Israel at “over 230” by the day of Al-Sharif’s martyrdom, and it said Palestinian journalists had written wills and gone into the field prepared for imminent death.
Mondoweiss also quoted Al-Sharif’s last message to the world: “I entrust you with Palestine… I urge you not to be silenced by chains, nor held back by borders… Do not forget Gaza.”
The Siasat Daily reported that the Israeli military said Al-Sharif was affiliated with Hamas, while Al Jazeera rejected the allegation and said he was targeted because of his journalism.
Mourning and competing claims
A year later, Gaza City held a vigil to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of Anas Al-Sharif and five other journalists killed in the same Israeli airstrike, with tributes shared on social media.
The Siasat Daily quoted journalist Osama Abu Rabie saying, “Gaza lost six voices that day, all carrying cameras and using their words to convey what was happening to the world.”

Al Jazeera’s correspondent Noor Khaled said the Palestinian journalists bloc organized a stand in front of the Al Jazeera tent, and participants called for accountability from Israel for ongoing violations and crimes against Palestinian journalists.
In the same commemoration, Imad Zaqout, head of the Palestinian Journalists Bloc, said the journalists came to “stress that the Palestinian narrative will remain present in the field.”
Mondoweiss framed the killings as part of a strategy of targeting journalists, quoting Hassan Esleih: “If the Israeli army kills me, the photos I took and the stories I told the world will live on.”
What comes next for press
The commemorations described the continued work of Gaza journalists under threat, with the Palestinian Journalists Bloc organizing rallies near Al-Shifa Hospital and participants holding up pictures of the six journalists killed on August 10, 2025.
“the continuation of transmitting the truth and documenting the suffering of Palestinians”
The Palestinian Information Center said dozens of Palestinian journalists gathered in Gaza City on Monday, August 10, 2026, to mark the first anniversary and stressed “the continuation of transmitting the truth and documenting the suffering of Palestinians.”
It also reiterated that on August 10, 2025, six journalists working for Al Jazeera were martyred in an airstrike carried out by an Israeli drone on their tents in front of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
Mondoweiss said that by the time of Al-Sharif’s martyrdom, Palestinian journalists had been killed in a pattern that included the 2022 killing of Shireen Abu Akleh and the 2018 killings of Yaser Murtaja and Ahmed Abu Hussein while covering the Great March of Return.
In the same account, Mondoweiss quoted Ayat Khaddoura’s last message: “We had big dreams, but our dream now is to be killed in one piece so they know who we are.”
