Hull stun United
Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium in the Premier League opener, with Semi Ajayi scoring from close range after a corner and Nobel Mendy doubling the lead with a header from a free-kick.
“left stunned by newly-promoted Tigers in their Premier League season opener”
Sky Sports said the result left Michael Carrick's side under pressure after one game, after Man Utd were “left stunned” by newly-promoted Tigers.

ESPN described the match as a “comeback” in which Hull City won in the first half, while United had the ball in the second half but “looked devoid of ideas and inspiration.”
The New York Times’ Premier League live coverage also placed Brentford ahead of Tottenham 3-0 in Week 1, with Igor Thiago missing a penalty after shooting low and hitting the post, as Michael Oliver pointed to the spot at 53'.
At the MKM Stadium, Sky Sports’ match timeline recorded Ajayi’s goal at 17' and Mendy’s at 38', while Carrick sent on Marcus Rashford in the second half after his first competitive appearance for United in 618 days.
Carrick stays calm
After the 2-0 loss, Michael Carrick told the Guardian: “Listen, we’re bitterly disappointed, but it won’t knock us… We can’t ignore it, we’ve got a lot to learn from it.”
The Guardian also quoted Carrick saying, “It’s one game, and it hurts, of course it does, but we’ll stay calm, stay in the bubble and focus on next week.”

Sky Sports reported that Carrick sent for Marcus Rashford for the second half, and it noted that Rashford’s introduction did not have the desired impact as United’s only real chance came through Bryan Mbeumo.
In the same Sky Sports account, Konstantinos Tzolakis made saves to deny Mbeumo and keep United from scoring, while the match’s key moments included Ajayi’s opener and Mendy’s header before the break.
The New York Times’ live blog placed Brentford’s 3-0 lead over Tottenham alongside its own penalty sequence, with Thiago stepping up after Michael Oliver pointed to the spot and then striking the post as Kinsky dived the wrong way.
Next fixtures loom
Sports Illustrated laid out Manchester United’s next five Premier League matches after the 2-0 loss to Hull City, starting with Manchester United vs Ipswich Town on 08/30/2026.
“they fell 2-0 to Hull City”
It then listed Everton vs Manchester United on 09/06/2026 at Hill Dickinson Stadium, followed by Manchester United vs Manchester City on 09/13/2026 for the season’s first derby.
Sports Illustrated also scheduled Fulham vs Manchester United on 09/20/2026 and Manchester United vs Tottenham on 10/10/2026, framing the run as a test of whether what happened in Hull was “just a blip and not the season’s logic.”
Sky Sports’ match report said Sky Sports readers were calling for defensive reinforcements with around 10 days remaining in the transfer window, after United slipped to defeat at the MKM Stadium.
Meanwhile, the New York Times’ Week 1 live coverage showed Brentford’s 3-0 control over Tottenham Hotspur as it tracked the 55' penalty miss and the 48' third goal, with Brentford’s Michael Kayode turning in after Kinsky palmed a Sangare volley.
