Iran FM Abbas Araghchi Warns Israel Attack on Beirut Would Trigger Full-Scale Resumption of War
Key Takeaways
- Iran warns any attack on Beirut would trigger full-scale resumption of war.
- Iran insists any deal ending the wider Middle East war must halt fighting in Lebanon.
- Iran's warning arises as Israel campaigns against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Beirut threat, war risk
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any Israeli attack on Beirut would have "grave consequences" and would lead to a "full-scale resumption" of the war, as Israel pressed its campaign against Hezbollah.
“Clashes continue in Lebanon despite Israel and Hezbollah accepting US partial ceasefire plan Clashes have continued in southern Lebanon despite Israel and Hezbollah accepting a US plan for a partial ceasefire”
Araghchi told Lebanon's Al Mayadeen television that Iran had adopted a decisive position when Israel threatened to strike Beirut's southern suburbs and had placed its armed forces on full alert for a potential counterattack.

The warning came alongside US President Donald Trump saying he had secured commitments from both Israel and Hezbollah to halt hostilities and portraying the move as a diplomatic breakthrough that helped prevent a wider Israeli offensive in Lebanon.
In parallel, Araghchi said Tehran and Washington were still studying draft texts that had been exchanged, while a member of the media team attached to Iran's negotiating delegation told Fars news agency that Tehran had not yet submitted its response to the latest US draft proposal.
Talks, ceasefire, and blame
Abbas Araghchi told Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV, via Tasnim, that communications with the United States had not been cut off and messages had been exchanged, but that "no tangible progress" had been made in negotiations to end the war.
In the same Tasnim framing, Araghchi warned that "Any attack on Beirut will trigger 'full-scale resumption of war'" and said Iran's armed forces were ready to strike Israel if it attacks Beirut.

The BBC reported that clashes continued in southern Lebanon despite Israel and Hezbollah accepting a US partial ceasefire plan, with Trump saying on Monday that "they agreed that all shooting will stop".
The BBC also said Netanyahu confirmed the agreement but added that strikes on Beirut would go ahead "if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and civilians," while Hezbollah said its fighters targeted Israeli tanks in Haddatha and Bayada with missiles and shells.
Pressure, escalation fears
The Guardian reported that Trump angrily confronted Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s threats to resume airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, quoting Axios as saying Trump shouted, "What the fuck are you doing?"
“TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Wednesday (Jun 3) that any attack on Beirut would trigger a "full-scale resumption" of the Middle East war, as Israel pressed its campaign against Lebanese militant group Hezbollah”
The Guardian also cited a US official summarising Trump’s remarks to Netanyahu: "You’re fucking crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me."
Separately, the BBC said at least 3,433 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the war, according to the country's health ministry, and that Israel says 25 of its soldiers and four Israeli civilians have been killed over the same period.
The BBC further reported that Iran's Tasnim news agency said Tehran could suspend indirect negotiations with the US over Israeli military actions in Lebanon, while in later posts on Truth Social Trump insisted talks with Iran were continuing at a "rapid pace".
