Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered a general closure on the occupied West Bank for the Jewish Sukkot holiday, with the measure set to run until Saturday, October 3, and the closure tightened restrictions at checkpoints and gates. Mohammed Abu Hijleh described how an iron gate operated by Israeli forces at the entrance to Deir Istiya, northwest of Salfit, stayed closed when his mother Zahriya Abu Hijleh needed an ambulance after collapsing at a wedding reception on September 20. Zahriya was transferred from the town’s medical centre to the gate and then carried past it on foot before reaching Salfit Governmental Hospital, where medics later determined she had suffered a pulmonary embolism.
Ibtihal Mansour described how closures at the Atara and Ein Siniya checkpoints north of Ramallah effectively trapped her family after they left at 10am, with the ordeal lasting until midnight for more than 14 hours.
