Journalists targeted, families fight
Israel has killed about 250 journalists since launching its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, a figure the Committee to Protect Journalists says reflects “the deadliest and most deliberate effort to kill and silence journalists” it has documented. The United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk called Gaza “a ‘death trap’ for journalists,” while Reporters Without Borders’ Middle East desk head Jonathan Dagher said the targeting of journalists “a tragedy for journalism”. Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif was killed in a targeted attack in front of al-Shifa Hospital in August 2025, and CNN carried the Israeli accusation that he worked for a Hamas cell, which Al Jazeera rejected.
Irene Khan, the UN’s special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, had warned against “repeated threats and accusations” against al-Sharif by the Israeli army weeks before the killing. The sources also describe Israel killing 22 people, including five journalists, in a “double-tap” strike in September 2025, with Reuters confirming that the camera belonged to it.

Israel reclassifies media workers
The Israeli army claimed that 170 Palestinian media workers and journalists killed in Gaza were members of armed factions, and it said 118 were affiliated with Hamas’ military wing and 49 with Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Israeli army also claimed that 17 had participated in the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, and it posted names on a website with documents and visuals as alleged evidence of the individuals’ affiliations and roles. A Palestinian journalist speaking anonymously for security reasons said local reporters had become “the world’s eyes inside Gaza,” adding, “We do not go to a location because we want to be a party to the war.”
The New Arab quoted a relative of Palestinian journalist Adam Abu Harbid saying, “Adam was a journalist; that is how we knew him throughout his life,” and the relative said, “He did not carry a weapon, nor did he conceal any military affiliation.” The New Arab also reported that Palestinian media organisations rejected the Israeli military allegations, saying Israeli claims cannot by themselves determine whether a deceased journalist was involved in military activity.

Teachers killed, detention and funds
The Palestinian Ministry of Education said Israel has killed more than 800 teachers and wounded more than 3,300 others since the start of the genocidal war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, and it marked the figures for World Teachers' Day on October 5 each year. The ministry said the education sector in Gaza and the West Bank has been subjected since the start of the war to a “comprehensive genocide,” and it added that more than 170 teachers have been arrested under harsh conditions. The ministry also described a financial crisis tied to Israel withholding Palestinian tax revenues, saying VAT funds make up about 56% of total Palestinian general revenues and that withholding them and deducting portions negatively impacts the government’s ability to pay staff salaries.
The ministry called on the international community, the United Nations, and educational and human rights organizations to “act urgently to stop the violations and provide international protection for students and teaching staff.” The New Arab and Anadolu-framed reporting also said teachers across the occupied Palestinian territories are fighting a “real battle for survival,” while more than 170 educators remain in Israeli detention and teachers face restrictions in movement and harassment at Israeli checkpoint.
