Al Jazeera said Hamas stated that the Israeli army killed Odeh, his wife and two of his sons in a strike that targeted a residential building in Gaza City the previous day.

The Israeli army said the killing of Odeh followed “months of intelligence monitoring aimed at tracking the movements of Odeh and his operatives,” and Al Jazeera reported that a source at al-Shifa Hospital said six people were killed and 20 others wounded in Israeli attacks late on Tuesday on the Remal neighbourhood in the western part of Gaza City.
Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary said, “Yesterday at about 9:30pm [19:30 GMT] three large explosions took place in Gaza City,” describing the attack as hitting an area filled with markets and shops as residents prepared for the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Funeral and threats
The Times of Israel reported that Hamas confirmed the death of Mohammed Odeh and that a funeral for Odeh and his family was held Wednesday in Gaza City, with mourners carrying their bodies covered in white burial shrouds and Hamas flags.
At the funeral, Abu Al-Abd Odeh told the crowd that, “This journey will not stop and the struggle of the Palestinian people will continue on all levels,” as the bodies were carried past buildings bombed out during Israel’s two-year bombardment of Gaza City.

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a post on X that, “The commander of Hamas terror organisation’s military arm number 4 in Gaza was eliminated yesterday and sent to meet his partners in the depths of hell,” framing the strike as part of a broader campaign against Hamas leaders.
CBC News reported that Odeh’s brother, Khalil, rejected the ceasefire framing, telling CBC News, “There is no ceasefire, this is empty talk, there is no ceasefire with the occupation,” as Gaza health officials said six people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded in the same Israeli strike that destroyed an upper floor of an apartment building in the Rimal neighbourhood.
Ceasefire strain and totals
Al Jazeera said that since the so-called “ceasefire” took effect on October 11, at least 906 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, and that the cumulative death toll since October 7, 2023, stands at 72,803, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Courthouse News reported that since a ceasefire took hold in Gaza in October, 910 people have been killed by Israel, according to the territory’s health ministry, and it also said Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense agency, told AFP that six people were killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza City’s upscale Rimal neighbourhood on Tuesday night.
The Times of Israel described Odeh as having assumed the top role in Gaza just 11 days before he was killed after Israel assassinated his predecessor Izz al-Din al-Haddad earlier this month, and it said the IDF and Shin Bet confirmed Odeh’s death after a Tuesday night strike.
Fox News said Israel would continue to pursue those it linked to the October 7 massacre, quoting Netanyahu and Israel Katz as saying, “We will continue to pursue anyone who took part in the October 7 massacre. Sooner or later, Israel will reach them all.”
