Tal shooting triggers West Bank
Israel prepared an "extensive" operation in the occupied West Bank after a shooting near the Palestinian village of Tal left six people dead, with four Palestinians and two Israelis killed, according to Vatican News.V

The Vatican News account says the Israeli military responded to reports of an attack on hikers and said armed individuals it described as "terrorists" took the weapon of a security guard, killed him, and were then shot dead by soldiers, while a second Israeli soldier was also killed.V
The BBC described conflicting accounts of the sequence of events in Tal, saying Palestinians told the BBC that residents confronted Jewish settlers who were attacking them and that soldiers then arrived and started shooting.B
In the BBC account, the IDF said it responded to reports that hikers had been attacked and that "terrorists stole the weapon" of a security guard, killed him, and were then killed by soldiers, with the other three Palestinians killed described as members of the same family.B
Reprisals, funerals, and blame
Palestinians buried four Palestinian men killed during a clash with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, and France 24 reported that Palestinians said Israelis set fire to olive groves in Farata and opened fire on people trying to extinguish the blaze.
France 24 quoted Tell village council head Walid Zidan saying, "Families of the four martyrs held a common funeral early this morning ... but the army restricted who could attend and only about 30 people were able to be there."
In a statement to The New Arab, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese said Israel was a "structurally colonial government, not one that occasionally deviates," and she argued that Smotrich and Ben-Gvir were "the engine of the annexationist agenda".
The New Arab also reported that the Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the attack as a "massacre," accusing Israel of pursuing a broader policy of "annexation "and ethnic cleansing" in the West Bank.
Lockdowns, arrests, and escalation
After the Tal shooting and the days of violence that followed, AP reported that Israel widely deployed troops in the West Bank and that a temporary closure was imposed on the city of Nablus and the Tal area while Israeli troops set up roadblocks and pursued the assailants.

AP said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz called for more troops and the razing of the homes of the accused in Tell, as well as collecting weapons and revoking work permits in the village, while also quoting their line that "The security forces must be allowed to act freely and with full force against terrorism."
The New Arab said the Israeli military announced it was reinforcing its presence ahead of what it described as a "significant counterterrorism operation" and that closures and a curfew were introduced in parts of the northern West Bank.
In the New Arab account, Albanese warned that "Outposts have historically functioned as launching pads for further attacks," and she said the sequence in Tell showed "There's no gap between event and response because the response was already prepared."
