Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian Man Who Threw Stones in Jenin Refugee Camp

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man inside the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, according to Israel's military and the Palestinian health ministry.

RTE.ie reported that the Israeli military said its troops shot dead a man who had thrown stones at soldiers inside the camp, and that the Ramallah-based health ministry said he was taken to Jenin Government Hospital.

The Palestinian Red Crescent had earlier announced that Israeli forces handed over the body of a 30-year-old from inside the Jenin refugee camp, which is adjacent to the city of Jenin.

RTE.ie also said Israeli forces have occupied and barred access to the Jenin refugee camp since January 2025, when they launched a wide-ranging operation aimed at uprooting Palestinian militant groups from the West Bank's densely populated refugee camps.

The same RTE.ie account tied the broader escalation to the Gaza war after Hamas's attack on 7 October 2023, saying an AFP tally based on Palestinian Authority data put Palestinian deaths in the West Bank at 1,073 since then.

In a separate account, Asharq Al-Awsat English said the Palestinian health ministry reported the killing in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, and that the ministry did not specify when he was killed.

Asharq Al-Awsat English quoted the Ramallah-based ministry statement that "A citizen ... was killed by Israeli fire in the Jenin camp, and ambulance crews transported his body to Jenin Government Hospital," while also saying Israel's military was "checking" reports of the man's killing.

The hospital director Wissam Baker identified the victim as Nasser al-Saadi and told AFP that "he arrived dead at the hospital after being shot in the thigh," according to Asharq Al-Awsat English.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that Palestinian officials said the victim’s identity and circumstances of killing were not known, and that the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said Israeli forces handed over the body.

Anadolu Ajansı also described the January 21, 2025 military operation in the northern occupied West Bank, saying it began in the Jenin camp before expanding to the Tulkarem and Nur Shams camps.

RTE.ie said the operation in the West Bank's densely populated refugee camps has caused the displacement of nearly 40,000 people from the camps, according to UNRWA.

RTE.ie also reported that at least 1,073 Palestinians, including several armed fighters, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers in the West Bank since the outbreak of the Gaza war following Hamas's attack on 7 October 2023, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian Authority data.

In contrast, RTE.ie said official Israeli data shows at least 46 Israelis, civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the same period.

Anadolu Ajansı added that Israeli army operations and settler attacks in the West Bank have killed 1,162 Palestinians, injured nearly 12,245, and led to 23,000 arrests since a ceasefire was signed last October.

Together, the accounts place the Jenin refugee camp killing inside a wider pattern of raids and access restrictions tied to the Gaza war, with the Jenin Government Hospital and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society repeatedly appearing in the reporting.
