21 Arrested in Gaza Fraud
Israeli police and military investigators arrested 21 suspects on Tuesday over an alleged multimillion-shekel fraud involving civilian contractors who operated heavy machinery in the Gaza Strip for the Israeli military, police said. Maariv said the arrests followed months-long covert investigations and a morning round of arrests by economic investigation teams in southern Israel, part of Lahav 433, in cooperation with the military police and VAT investigators in Beersheba.
The investigation described civilian contractors who won bids to carry out infrastructure works and operate heavy engineering equipment for the army in Gaza as exploiting their activities to reap illicit profits amounting to millions of shekels. Maariv said the suspicions include theft of fuel worth millions of shekels and the use of fake invoices from different companies, in practices suspected of falling under money laundering.

Bribes and Oversight
The investigation centered on suspicions of involvement of five sergeants who acted as army representatives and supervisors of the contractors’ work on the ground. A source familiar with the investigation said the suspicions include contractors paying money to sergeants in exchange for overlooking violations or enabling them to reap illicit profits from the contracts.
Israel National News said the covert probe examined suspected wrongdoing involving fuel intended for use in military vehicles and also concerned suspicions of obtaining property by fraud, money laundering, and bribery. Israel Hayom said investigators suspected that civilian contractors and career military personnel exploited the military's urgent operational needs to fraudulently obtain millions of shekels from state funds.

Courts, Detention, and Next Steps
Lahav 433 and the Military Police raided several sites and detained the suspects as the case moved to the public phase on Tuesday morning. The suspects were taken to investigative premises, with some expected to be referred to Beersheba Magistrate’s Court and others to the military court in Beit Leed, with a request to extend their detention.
Israel National News said the civilian suspects would be brought before the Be'er Sheva Magistrate's Court, while hearings involving career military personnel would take place at the military court in Beit Lid. The police, the military police, and the Tax Authority said the investigation is ongoing and they will continue to work to uncover the case’s details and bring those involved to justice if the suspicions against them are substantiated.
