Teen footballer dies in attack

A 17-year-old Palestinian footballer, Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, died on Saturday after being shot during an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank village of al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to officials and relatives. Al Jazeera said al-Nassan was shot on July 11, his leg was amputated, and he died from his injuries a week later, after dozens of mourners carried his body from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his home village for burial.

The Vanguard News report identified his father, Hamdallah Al-Nassan, and said his leg was amputated after he was shot in the thigh during the attack. Both outlets tied the death to the broader violence in the West Bank since the Gaza war began in October 2023, with Vanguard News noting that Israeli forces and settlers have killed at least 1,088 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 2023, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry data.

Family says he ran

Al-Nassan’s father, Hamdallah al-Nassan, told AFP, “When the settlers attacked, he heard the screams of girls and women,” and said, “He went to the scene of the attack and was killed.”

Al Jazeera also quoted his mother, Hanan al-Nassan, saying, “He was a good student, good in sports, and loved playing football. Everyone loved him,” and added that she asked God to accept him as a martyr.

The Palestine Football Association accused Israeli forces of shooting al-Nassan in the thigh while settlers were attacking the village, and Al Jazeera said his leg was later amputated before he died.

Vanguard News reported that the Israeli military did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment Saturday, while also describing how mourners carried the body of the 17-year-old from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his village for burial.

Wider Gaza war toll

Beyond the West Bank killing of al-Nassan, the Al Jazeera report described Saturday’s violence as including Israeli settlers setting fire to Palestinian property near Ramallah and a family home near Nablus, alongside Israeli raids in towns near Jenin. Al Jazeera said the attacks came as Israeli forces raided homes in towns near Jenin and described Deir Qaddis, west of Ramallah, where Israeli soldiers fired live rounds and tear gas at Palestinian farmers working their land, starting fires that tore through olive groves.

In Gaza, the Al Jazeera-linked reporting in the source set described Israeli air and artillery bombardment targeting a tent sheltering displaced people, an apartment, and a civilian gathering in Gaza City, with Anadolu Agency citing medical sources and eyewitnesses for the deaths. The same source set also cited the Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip saying the death toll from what it described as Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement rose to 1,144 dead and 3,703 wounded, and said the total number of Palestinians killed since the war began on October 8, 2023 reached 73,269 with 173,811 injured.
