Drones, strikes, four dead

Israeli air strikes on southern Lebanon on Sunday killed four people, including two women, according to the country’s health ministry, after Israel said it carried out the strikes in response to Hezbollah drone attacks targeting troops in an area it has declared a security zone. France 24 reported that Lebanon’s health ministry said the deaths occurred in Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Arab Salim, and it said 20 other people were wounded, with the toll described as provisional.

Al Jazeera said the strikes began at dawn on Sunday and hit Nabatieh, Arab Salim, Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Reman, and it reported that two women were killed and six people wounded in an air attack on Arab Salim after Israeli forces issued a forced displacement order for a building in the town. Israel’s military said it was striking south Lebanon after Hezbollah fighters launched two drones towards Israeli soldiers operating in Israel’s self-declared “security zone” in the south, and it did not report any troop casualties in the incident.

Evacuation orders and claims

Ahead of the strikes, Israel’s military issued an evacuation notice in Lebanon in several weeks, warning residents near a building it identified as a Hezbollah “facility” in Arab Salim to leave their homes of an attack on the site, and it did not issue warnings for other areas where strikes were reported.

France 24 quoted Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency saying that after the Israeli warning for the building, “enemy warplanes launched a strike on another house, destroying it” and killing the two women.

The Times of Israel said the IDF Arabic Spokesperson Lt. Col. Ella Waweya issued an evacuation order on X/Twitter and urged residents: “We urge all residents present in the building marked in red on the attached map and the adjacent buildings to evacuate immediately,”

while Israel’s military described the drone attack as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire and said it struck Hezbollah infrastructure and operatives in response, according to The Times of Israel.

What comes next

Israel and Lebanon have continued reporting strikes and negotiations alongside a broader ceasefire context, with Al Jazeera saying the number of attacks has decreased since a US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding on the broader conflict in June and that Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement later that month. Al Jazeera also said Israel is still operating inside a self-declared “security zone” about 10km (six miles) deep inside Lebanon, and it reported that Israel was considering pulling its troops occupying Lebanese territory closer to the Israeli border.

In parallel, the Livemint live blog said Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held phone calls with his Saudi and Turkish counterparts as leaders discussed regional developments and diplomatic efforts, while it also said Tehran condemned US strikes on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman and termed them a violation of the UN Charter. The Livemint live blog further reported that Iran’s military vowed “more severe” retaliatory attacks on US naval vessels if Washington kept up its strikes on Iranian ships, and it quoted Khatam al-Anbiya central command saying the strikes by Iran’s armed forces “will be more severe than before” and that there is a possibility of their expansion.
