Keegan told the BBC that the doctor he met was a Liverpool supporter and that he was given a treatment with a "33%" strike rate, adding, "I'm still here at the moment."

The New York Times said Keegan is 75 and that Newcastle wrote on social media after the announcement, saying, "We send our heartfelt support and warmest wishes to Kevin Keegan and his family following his recent diagnosis of stage four cancer."

Support and Standing Ovation

Keegan’s public update came after the football world rallied around him, with the BBC describing an emotional standing ovation as he returned to Newcastle for the live event.

Speaking on stage, Keegan told the BBC, "So I went to meet him. He's a Liverpool supporter so I knew I wouldn't walk alone," and he framed the moment as part of why he felt he could face the diagnosis.

Newcastle’s response, as quoted by the BBC, included an invitation that he would "always be warmly welcomed at St James' Park," while the club also posted its support on X.

The New York Times said Keegan spoke at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House and that Newcastle’s statement described his "unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle United" and the way his passion and leadership shaped "some of our most memorable moments."

Treatment, Return, and Goodbye

Keegan told Sky Sports presenter Pete Graves that he is responding well to treatment after being diagnosed with stage four cancer, and Sky Sports said he was admitted to hospital with "ongoing abdominal symptoms" before tests revealed the disease.

At the same Tyne Theatre and Opera House appearance, Keegan said, "I want to say goodbye. I didn't get the chance when I left the club last time," and Sky Sports said Newcastle icon Keegan is set to make his return to St James’ Park next season.

The BBC also reported Keegan reiterated his desire to return to say goodbye while being conscious of "intruding," and it quoted him saying, "You will have to wait until I die, I'm afraid," when asked about a statue.

In its statement quoted by the BBC, Newcastle sent "heartfelt support" and "warmest wishes" to Keegan and his family, saying he "will always be warmly welcomed at St James' Park" and that the club hoped to see him again soon.
