FBI attributes $6.3B Binance hack to North Korea; US may discuss responsibility with Pyongyang. Kim Yo Jong denies North Korea involvement, calls FBI accusations politically motivated.

North Korea denied responsibility for the Binance hack, and Kim Yo Jong said the FBI was trying to brand the DPRK as a “cyber criminal state”.

Kim Yo Jong made the denial in a statement issued three days after the FBI announced on Oct. 31 local time that a group linked to North Korea was behind the Binance hack.

The FBI’s attribution came as Binance said it suspended all transactions after the incident and said it has covered around 95% of the assets stolen.

Binance also said it processed withdrawals of $4.649 billion between 06:00 and 15:30 [GMT] on November 1, and that the result was a net outflow of approximately $3.64 billion.

Chainalysis senior manager Alec Zebrick told the BBC’s Today Programme that “We continue to see funds being laundered quite actively.”

US weighs talks

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at his Florida residence that Washington does not know if North Korea is behind the breach, and he said, “We don’t know if it’s North Korea but if it is, we’ll talk to North Korea about it.”

The Korea Times reported that the FBI identified the North Korean cyber operation as “TraderTraitor,” and the FBI said it had observed the hackers converting stolen assets primarily into Ethereum.

The FBI statement said it observed “TraderTraitor” actors moving the stolen assets to Ethereum, and it urged private sector entities “to block transactions with or derived from addresses used by TraderTraitor actors”.

Binance said it reserved more than $6.3bn in funds to deal with the fallout of the attack, and it said withdrawals would resume in phases once security checks were completed.

Binance said it has replaced customers’ assets using a combination of sources, including its corporate treasury as well as its futures insurance and emergency reserve funds.

Hack fallout and next moves

Binance resumed allowing withdrawals gradually on Sunday, and it said it was taking a phased approach while prioritizing tokens based on user request data from the past week. Binance said it had covered about 90% of the cryptocurrency stolen by the hackers, and it reiterated, “Our commitment remains constant: Binance will bear the financial impact of the stolen funds.” The FBI said it observed elements of the TraderTreasure group transferring the stolen assets primarily into Ethereum, and it added that it is expected the assets will be laundered again through DeFi funding and spot swaps.

Kim Yo Jong rejected the FBI’s attribution and said, “But the US assertion is an absurd rhetoric and nothing new,” while pointing to the possibility that the US could have been behind the theft. Binance said it allocated more than $6.34 billion (€5.68 billion) of its funds to cover the losses from the breach, and it stated on X, “Our commitment remains the same: Binance will fully cover the financial impact of the stolen funds in this incident.”
