Envoy role ends
Kristi Noem is no longer serving as the Trump administration’s special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, after her envoy status expired last month, a State Department official told CBS News.
“She continues to be at the State Department as a senior adviser.”
Tommy Pigott said the secretary’s time as envoy expired and that Noem continues to be at the State Department as a senior adviser.

Noem’s envoy designation expired just before the United Nations General Assembly last month in New York, where she continued participating in diplomatic meetings connected to the initiative.
Noem met with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Sept. 22 and attended a gathering of Shield of the Americas leaders hosted by President Trump.
Noem was appointed special envoy in March after she was removed as Homeland Security secretary and her transition coincided with a five-country tour of Latin America and the Caribbean in March.
New advisory assignment
A State Department official told CNN that Noem is now a Senior Advisor to Deputy Secretary Landau and continues to work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio. Noem said in a statement posted on X that the special envoy role "was always a six-month appointment." Noem is now a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary Landau and continues to work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio.
Pigott told NewsNation that Noem would remain working on the Shield of the Americas initiative but declined to provide specifics on what this would entail. Trump praised Noem during a Shield of Americas meeting last month at the United Nations General Assembly, saying, "I want to thank Kristi Noem for doing a really terrific job."

What the shift means
The Shield of the Americas is a coalition made up of the United States and several Caribbean and Latin American countries established by the Trump administration earlier this year to cooperate on economic matters and anti-cartel enforcement, CBS News reported. WCTI reported that the coalition is led by the United States in the Western Hemisphere and that President Trump established it in March with a focus on regional security, counternarcotics enforcement of drug cartels, intelligence sharing, border security and critical mineral partnerships. Noem’s envoy designation expired just before the United Nations General Assembly last month in New York, where she continued participating in diplomatic meetings connected to the initiative.
Pigott said Noem would remain dedicated to implementing the president’s agenda across the board, and Pigott said, "This is part of what’s happening with these positions." Trump fired Noem from his Cabinet earlier this year after multiple controversies while she ran the Department of Homeland Security, and CNN said her ouster in March came after Noem told lawmakers that Trump approved of her agency’s lavish spending on an advertising campaign.
