Light Flip unveiled
Light has announced the Light Flip, a $299 clamshell flip phone designed to replace the Light Phone III’s touchscreen with a physical keypad and to omit a selfie camera.

The device is set to ship in April 2027, and Light says it will be available in six colors: black, navy, red, pink, yellow, and light gray.
On the inside, the Light Flip runs LightOS on a 2.8-inch matte OLED display with a 480×640 resolution, and it pairs a MediaTek MT8873 chipset with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Light says the Flip’s 1,800 mAh battery is removable and accessible behind a screw-down plate, and it includes 5G, 4G LTE, nano SIM and eSIM support, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, USB-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The company also positions the Flip as an “entry point” to its product line, while noting the Light Phone III remains available at its current price and the Light Phone II is being discontinued.
Tools, no feeds
Light’s software approach centers on tools that users can add and take away, with Light saying its devices will never have email or social media apps.
In an interview, Light founders Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang said the Light Flip tries to address modern flip phones that “come pre-installed with apps, browsers, email clients, all of these things.”
Tang compared the shift in attitudes toward smartphones to the cultural change around smoking, telling TechCrunch that “It used to be OK, it used to be cool ... then people realise, this is not healthy.”
LightOS is described as supporting features like navigation, a music player, predictive T9 texting, voice-to-text, and audio messaging, while the Flip has no external screen when closed and instead uses a notification light.
Light also says its SDK program is open for community-built tools, with the company stating that more than 2,000 developers have expressed interest in building utilities like field recorders and local transit maps.
A bet on restraint
Light is pricing the unlocked Light Flip at $299, while offering a $39 per month plan that bundles the phone with Light’s carrier service for two years and includes unlimited voice and text plus 1GB of data per month.

The Verge reports Tang saying “We have users who tell us, ‘Hey, I hate smartphones. I don’t want to be seen using a smartphone,’” and that those users asked for “a Light Phone, but a flip phone.”
Engadget frames the Flip as a distraction-free device that has none of the “endless scroll” apps that dominate people's attention, and it describes the phone as having a 12-button keypad with T9 texting.
Light says the Flip keeps the same LightOS tools as the Light Phone III, and it adds that the only thing the new device can’t do is tap-to-pay because there’s no NFC chip inside.
Across coverage, the device is repeatedly tied to a broader pushback against AI and smartphone app ecosystems, with Wired quoting Tang saying “They don't want to be seen as using a smartphone,” and with Glitchwire describing the Flip as a bet that enough people will pay to actively remove features from their lives.
