Loan deal for Araujo
Liverpool agreed a season-long loan deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo, with the move described as a surprise addition for the Reds as they deal with uncertainty and shortages in central defence.

Fabrizio Romano said Liverpool reached a verbal agreement with Barcelona to sign Araújo on loan, and the agreement was approved by Barcelona sporting director Deco, while an option to buy is included.
The Liverpool Offside said the deal is for Araújo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan centre half, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
Sky Sports reported the deal is a straight loan for the 27-year-old, who signed a new contract until 2031 last year, and said Liverpool were adding depth at centre-back after losing Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid and facing fitness concerns over Jeremy Jacquet.
ESPN said Liverpool are set to sign Araújo on a season-long loan deal that includes an option for a permanent transfer, with sources telling ESPN the Reds’ new head coach Andoni Iraola had been in the market for a defender as Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Jérémy Jacquet worked back from injury.
Why Liverpool needed him
Sky Sports said Liverpool’s defensive options were stretched after Ibrahima Konaté’s departure to Real Madrid and fitness concerns over 21-year-old Jeremy Jacquet, while Joe Gomez suffered a muscle injury in Liverpool’s opening pre-season game and Giovanni Leoni was still recovering from an ACL injury.
The New York Times said Giovanni Leoni remained sidelined from an anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in September last year and Joe Gomez was set to miss the start of the Premier League season due to a muscular injury sustained in pre-season.
The New York Times also said Iraola admitted the squad was “thin” defensively and that Luke Chambers deputised in the middle during the pre-season tour of America.
ESPN said Araújo accepted the Premier League club’s proposal after realizing that, under Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, he would not get the playing time he desired.
Mundo Deportivo reported that after a conversation with Hansi Flick, Araújo decided to seek more minutes away from the Camp Nou because the idea for the campaign was that he would keep the same role with little protagonism and more of a secondary part.

Multiple outlets said the loan agreement includes a purchase option, with the Liverpool Offside describing a season-long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent should Liverpool wish to do so at the end of the campaign.

Mundo Deportivo said Araújo’s agents traveled to Barcelona in an operation exprés and that only the officialization of the agreement remained for Araújo to incorporate to Anfield.
The New York Times said Araujo was granted indefinite leave by Barcelona at the beginning of December after requesting a period of absence and returned to the team at the end of January.
