Guilty plea in Manhattan

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in a Manhattan federal court on Friday to federal charges tied to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, admitting to interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death.

“On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,”

Mangione told the court, “On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” as Thompson’s wife, Paulette, listened in the audience and wiped tears.

Prosecutors said Mangione trailed Thompson to an investor conference and used a ruse, posing as an investor, to contact the company for details about the event.

U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald, whose office handled the federal case, hailed the plea and described the killing as “deliberate, calculated and premeditated,” while also saying the guilty plea is “open” and allows his office to seek the maximum punishment allowed under the law: life imprisonment.

Defense, double jeopardy fight

After the plea, defense lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo said Mangione had accepted “full responsibility” for Thompson’s killing but argued he was treated unfairly because he faced both federal and state charges.

A motion filed in New York state court sought to toss the murder and multiple firearms counts under New York’s double jeopardy law, and the AP reported that prosecutors planned to seek a life prison term at sentencing set for Dec. 18.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said it “remains fully committed” to pursuing justice for Thompson’s family and would contest efforts to shut down the state prosecution.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch condemned the killing outside court, saying, “To those who idolize Luigi Mangione, I say this. Violence is not a cause. Murder is not a message. And a killer is certainly not a hero,” as the case became a fulcrum for debate about the health insurance industry.

Sentencing and what’s at risk

Mangione’s federal sentencing is set for Dec. 18, with AP reporting prosecutors plan to seek a life prison term and the federal case carrying the possibility of life imprisonment.

prosecutors clarified that they would be recommending life in prison, the steepest sentence available.

NBC NewsNBC News

CBS News reported the judge told Mangione the maximum possible sentence is life in prison followed by supervised release, and NBC News said prosecutors clarified they would be recommending life in prison, the steepest sentence available.

The plea also reshapes the state case, with NBC News saying the guilty plea is expected to kick off a double jeopardy fight in state court where he still faces murder charges and the possibility of life in prison.

The Guardian reported that after the hearing, prosecutors said, “There can be no celebrity in assassination,” while Mangione’s team announced it filed paperwork to dismiss the separate state case that is due to start in September, leaving “the Mangione saga” still “not over.”
