Lula accuses Israel at UN
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned Israel’s government for what he called “pain and trauma” inflicted on Gaza, telling the UN General Assembly that the suffering will “last generations.” Lula said Palestinians “will bear the pain and trauma left by the genocide of women and children carried out by the Netanyahu government in Gaza,” as he spoke from the UN rostrum in New York.
Lula also attacked the UN’s ability “to free humanity from the scourge of war,” saying “Its credibility has never been weaker,” and he denounced Security Council inaction. Israel rejected genocide allegations and recalled that the war in Gaza targets Hamas, which uses civilian areas to protect its fighters and its terrorist infrastructure, while Benjamin Netanyahu was set to speak Thursday before the General Assembly.

Albanese must not be silenced
Lula defended UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory Francesca Albanese and insisted she must not be silenced for her reporting, saying “UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese cannot be silenced for telling the truth.” Lula also criticized pressure against the International Criminal Court and warned that “Persecuting the International Criminal Court and its members is an incentive for these crimes to go unpunished,” during his address to the UN General Assembly.
Lula condemned Hamas’s attack against Israelis, saying “Israeli civilians paid the price for the radicalism and intolerance of Hamas’s terrorist acts,” while he described Israel’s response in Gaza as “collective punishment.” Lula’s remarks came as the UN General Assembly general debate ran from September 22–26 and resumed on September 28, according to Roya News.
Diplomacy, sovereignty, and UNGA
Lula told the UN General Assembly that “Brazil is not anyone’s backyard,” and he avoided the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, after the Brazilian leader was greeted by officials from various countries. Lula called for a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and said, “Diplomacy is the only option,” while he argued that dividing the world into “neocolonial spheres of influence” was “an anachronistic measure.”
Lula also opposed a greater foreign military presence in the region, saying, “We do not need aircraft carriers off our waters,” and he framed border control as Brazil’s responsibility rather than externalization. In the same UNGA context, Itongadol reported that the Strait of Hormuz had become a battleground and that Iran indicated it could reopen the sea lane within seven days if Washington lifts the blockade on its ports and eases military pressure.
