Rubio invites Putin
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami in December.
Rubio told reporters in New York that resolving international disputes requires dialogue with governments and leaders with whom Washington has serious disagreements.
Rubio said the summit would allow Putin to hold talks with the U.S. president and other world leaders, and Washington hopes the Russian president will accept the invitation.
Rubio also said, "We remain open to engaging," while discussing the invitation after a meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Dates and possible talks
The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the G20 summit in Miami is scheduled for December 14-15, 2026, and he described the invitation as an opportunity for Putin to personally attend the meeting of the leaders of the Group of Twenty.
Putin’s attendance could create an opportunity for Putin to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump if Putin attends the summit, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be among the participants.
The Kyiv Independent said that if Putin does attend, it would mark his second visit to the U.S. during President Donald Trump’s second term, and it pointed to a first state visit in August 2025 to Alaska for talks on the war in Ukraine.
Rubio said, "So we've invited President Putin to the G20," and it described Rubio’s argument that direct meetings could help address difficult issues.
Zelenskyy readiness
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to meet Putin on the sidelines of the summit in Miami, and Zelenskyy could also be among the participants if Putin attends.
Zelenskyy said, "Yes, of course. We have to come. We have to meet, talk and make decisions," while describing Zelenskyy’s repeated readiness to meet Putin in person.
