Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory in the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 on Tuesday, taking his fourth stage win after a lead-out from Wout van Aert.

Brennan crossed the line ahead of Bryan Coquard and Vito Braet in Palos de la Frontera, with the stage run from Cortegana over 181.1 kilometers.
NBC Sports described Brennan as winning his fourth stage Tuesday in the 21-year-old British rider’s Grand Tour debut, while Van Aert delivered the leadout with 100 meters left.
The overall leader Enric Mas retained his red jersey with a 2 minutes, 6 seconds advantage over Felix Gall, and Primož Roglič was four seconds back in third.
In the stage’s aftermath, Brennan raised his right hand with four fingers out in a victory salute as he completed the sprint finale.
Mas keeps red
After 16 stages, overall leader Enric Mas retained his advantage in the red jersey of 2 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of Felix Gall, with Primož Roglič a further 4 second back in third.
FloBikes reported that Mas maintained his lead of 2 minutes, 6 seconds over Felix Gall in the General Classification, with Primoz Roglic a further four seconds behind.
Brennan said, "It's unbelievable, four victories here, and the plan was for one," after holding up four fingers to celebrate each of his four stage wins.
The Guardian added that Brennan said, "It’s unbelievable. Four stages and the plan was for one," as he reflected on winning a fourth stage on his Grand Tour debut.
With Wednesday’s stage described as a flat ride into Seville before a 32.5-km time trial Thursday, the race moved toward a key sequence for Roglič’s hopes.
Visma’s sprint control
Multiple outlets tied Brennan’s win to Visma-Lease a Bike’s sprint control, with van Aert repeatedly described as delivering a lead-out that put Brennan in position.

Cycling Weekly said Brennan finished two bike lengths ahead of second placed Bryan Coquard, while it quoted Brennan thanking teammates for protecting him from the wind: "Todo el día los chicos me han protegido del viento".
The Guardian framed van Aert’s work as setting up the win in a chaotic finale, quoting Brennan: "It’s incredible that he can bring you in such a perfect position in such a chaotic race."
FloBikes reported that van Aert led out for Brennan, who cruised to a comfortable victory, and that Belgian rider Van Aert had won two stages himself, bringing Visma’s total to six in this edition.
Looking ahead, FloBikes said Wednesday’s Stage 17 runs 185 kilometres from Dos Hermanas to Seville for another sprint finale, while NBC Sports noted the Vuelta finishes Sunday in Granada.
