Met investigates 2016 allegation
The Metropolitan Police is investigating an allegation that former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson raped a woman inside the Houses of Parliament in 2016, after the force received a report referred by the Police Service of Northern Ireland on Tuesday October 13.
“The investigation is in its early stages. No arrests have been made and inquiries remain ongoing.”
The Met said it received the report “relating to an allegation of rape in 2016, by a man now aged 63,” and the allegation relates to one victim who is being supported by specialist officers.
The Met added that “The investigation is in its early stages. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing,” while Donaldson is seeking to appeal his convictions.
The alleged incident happened in 2016 “at the very heart of the political establishment,” and the woman has been interviewed by Police Service of Northern Ireland officers.
Sentence, appeal, and context
Donaldson was sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of child sex offences against two victims, including one count of rape, which took place between 1985 and 2008. Judge Paul Ramsey told Newry Crown Court that Donaldson had shown no “regret, apology or shame” after he was convicted of 18 offences, including one count of rape, earlier this year.
Donaldson was the leader of the DUP from 2021 to 2024, and the Guardian described the Met’s investigation as involving a report received on 13 October about an alleged rape in the Palace of Westminster. Donaldson was found guilty in June of 18 counts of sexual offences, including one of rape, committed against two women when they were children over a 20-year period, and he was sentenced last week to a total of 15 years imprisonment.
Parliament, PSNI referral
The Met confirmed it received a report from the Police Service of Northern Ireland on 13 October, and the alleged rape involved a man now aged 63. Police were investigating an allegation that former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson raped a woman in the Houses of Parliament in the UK, and the Metropolitan Police did not identify the politician, 63, but said it was investigating a report passed on by officers in Northern Ireland.
The PSNI shared the woman’s claims with the Metropolitan Police because the alleged incident happened in London, and the Met issued a statement without naming the former DUP leader. A woman from Northern Ireland alleged she had been sexually assaulted by Donaldson in the DUP offices at Parliament in 2016, and the same woman also alleges Donaldson raped her.
