Mandarin Oriental Imploded
The 23-story Mandarin Oriental hotel was demolished in a controlled implosion on April 12, 2026. The building collapsed in less than 20 seconds following blasts at 8:30 a.m. The demolition was the culmination of nearly two years of planning and coordination.
Residents within an 800-foot exclusion zone were asked to stay indoors. The implosion was selected as the safest and most efficient method. The site will be redeveloped into The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami.
Community Reaction
Crowds gathered to watch the implosion from safe distances. Over 400 people watched from the Brickell Bay Walk. People cheered and recorded videos as the building collapsed.
Dust filled the air but dissipated within minutes. Miami Police closed the Brickell Key Bridge and rerouted traffic. City Commissioner Rosado called it a signal that Miami is the place to be.
Future Development
The new development will consist of two towers combining a hotel and private residences. The north tower will have 121 guest rooms, about a third of the old hotel's capacity. The south tower will be all private residences.
The move exemplifies a push towards the super high-end market. Construction is scheduled to begin later in 2026. Completion is targeted for 2030.
