Cloud Playtime Pricing
Microsoft is rolling out Xbox Insiders a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming called cloud playtime, with introductory launch pricing starting at 10 hours for $3.99. Microsoft is also setting two higher bundles for the same option, 25 hours for $7.99 and 50 hours for $11.99, and it says the purchased time remains available until it is used.
Microsoft is positioning the paid packs as ad-free cloud gaming, and it is describing them as including shorter wait times and high-quality streaming. Microsoft is also testing an ads-supported alternative for Insiders, with the free option described as limited to games users already own and sessions capped at one hour.
Game Pass Hour Caps
Microsoft is also preparing to limit cloud gaming usage hours for Game Pass subscribers starting in November, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate set at 15 hours per month. Microsoft is setting Xbox Game Pass Premium at 10 hours per month and Xbox Game Pass Essential at 5 hours per month for cloud gaming.
Microsoft is telling players that once they use their included hours, they can buy additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Microsoft is framing the change as part of decoupling cloud gaming from Game Pass, with Kotaku describing the shift as turning Xbox Cloud Gaming into Xbox Cloud Playtime with a pay-as-you-go model.
What Changes for Players
Microsoft is telling Xbox Insiders that cloud playtime packs provide an ad-free cloud gaming experience, including shorter wait times, high-quality streaming, and playtime that remains available until it’s used. Microsoft is also telling Insiders they can try cloud gaming for free with ads, as another option for accessing cloud gaming without a Game Pass subscription.
Microsoft is describing the paid option as requiring cloud playable game purchase or, for select games, free-to-play access, rather than functioning like the Game Pass “all-you-can-play” model. Microsoft is also stating that the preview is designed to give Insiders an early look at the new option before it rolls out more broadly next month.
