Full story

Solara debuts at Build

Microsoft unveiled Project Solara on June 2 at its annual Build 2026 developer conference in San Francisco, presenting it as an operating system tailored for AI agents.

Microsoft has been deeply committed to the growth of generative AI technology in recent years through its now-fragmented partnership with OpenAI

DigitalToday said Project Solara is designed on Android rather than Windows, and it is focused on running AI agents across devices including smart speakers, security badges and earbuds.

Reuters described the same Build 2026 push as a “new era of AI-driven devices,” with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella using the keynote to say the company would expand the Windows AI API to more PCs.

DigitalToday also reported that Microsoft showcased two concept devices, including a desk concept that unlocks with facial recognition and a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box equipped with an Nvidia RTX Spark chip and 128GB unified memory.

Agents, badges, and pilots

At Build 2026, Microsoft previewed two concept devices for Project Solara, including a desk concept “similar to Amazon Echo Show” that provides access to AI agents after facial recognition unlocks.

The Verge said the badge concept is a wearable with a camera and a fingerprint scanner that “can wake an AI agent with a single press,” and it also described Microsoft demonstrating the ability to tap and record a conversation and instantly transcribe it.

GeekWire reported that Microsoft “won’t ship these devices itself,” instead positioning them as reference designs for hardware makers and other industry partners to turn into implementations.

GeekWire also said companies including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi’s, and Target were expected to begin pilots of devices based on the reference designs.

Android foundation and enterprise

Multiple outlets tied Project Solara’s Android foundation to Microsoft’s goal of supporting agent-first experiences across device types, with DigitalToday saying it is designed on Android rather than Windows.

Ars Technica reported that Microsoft says Solara is “a chip-to-cloud platform intended to free agents from reliance on single interfaces,” and it described the underlying OS as the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform rather than a licensed Android package.

GeekWire said Microsoft chose the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform, or MDEP, over Windows “deliberately, to run on smaller, lower-power devices while keeping the management and security features IT departments expect.”

GeekWire further specified that those IT features include patch and over-the-air updates, device integrity, Microsoft Defender, Intune, and Entra ID sign-in, as Microsoft framed the platform as spanning from chip to cloud.
