Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said the male suspect was shot and killed right away and that the incident began around noon in a busy part of the city’s Côte-des-Neiges area.

Quebec’s domestic security minister Ian Lafrenière said, "For now, we don't really know what the motive of this individual was," as the injured officer was taken to hospital.

The BBC reported that the death of the yet-to-be-named officer marked the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer was killed while on duty, and it said traffic in a nearby busy motorway was brought to a stop and local metro service was halted.

Officials urge caution

Dagher told reporters, "It's a nightmare," as Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said she was "deeply shaken by the tragic events" and added that it was essential to allow authorities to do their work and avoid speculation.

Law enforcement earlier warned of an "armed and dangerous" suspect in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges area and urged residents to stay indoors, while the shelter-in-place order was later lifted.

CNN reported that police were examining a so-called manifesto that runs over 100 pages they believe may have been written by the gunman, and it said the manifesto reportedly espouses incel ideology.

In a social media post, Montreal mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said, "My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty," as the province issued and then lifted an emergency alert warning residents of an armed suspect.

Investigation and wider impact

CBC reported that ten investigators from Quebec's police watchdog, theBureau des enquêtes indépendantes(BEI), were assigned to investigate the events during the Montreal police intervention.

The BEI statement cited by CBC said it investigates in all cases where a person, other than a police officer on duty, dies, suffers a serious injury, or is injured by a firearm used by an officer during a police intervention or while in police custody.

CBC also described a video circulating online and verified by CBC News, saying that in 58 seconds "we hear at least 29 shots being fired" as a police officer lay on the ground and the shooter appeared to fire toward the officer.

Beyond Montreal, CBC noted that the month also saw other violent incidents involving Canadian police officers, including that on June 9 Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali was killed near Hearst, Ont., and that Const. Marc Pinizzotto, 43, with Toronto police was shot and killed on June 11.
