The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the unnamed vessel reported being hit approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Al Khasab, Oman, and authorities did not provide details on damage or whether any crew members were injured.

WION reported that the incident occurred at 2 a.m. local time, 37 kilometres (23 miles) northeast of Al Khasab, and said the vessel was identified as Liberian-flagged MV Minoan Pioneer.

WION added that the projectile reportedly struck the engine room, while a fire broke out in the accommodation area, and that the crew were fighting the fire and required assistance as the third engineer was reported missing.

Conflicting talks claims

The reported strike came as the United States and Iran offered sharply conflicting accounts of whether negotiations had resumed, with Trump saying talks were under way while Iran rejected that account.

Ynetnews quoted Trump saying, "Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking," while it reported that Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Tehran was not conducting negotiations with the U.S. and was speaking only with Oman.

IranWire said the UKMTO classified the incident as an "attack" and advised ships operating in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.

IranWire also reported that the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 AM Tehran time on Tuesday, August 4, about 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Khasab region, near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

Blackout, missing engineer

In the Omani sector of the Strait of Hormuz near the Musandam Peninsula, The Maritime Executive reported that at about 2200 hours on August 3 the crew of an unnamed cargo vessel broadcast a VHF distress signal reporting it had been hit by an unknown projectile.

The Maritime Executive said Vanguard Tech reported the bulker Minoan Pioneer (IMO 9471630) was hit in her engine room, resulting in a complete blackout and a fire in the accommodations area, and that the third engineer went missing following the blast.

Ouest-France reported that "One person is missing" on the cargo struck by an unknown projectile overnight from Monday to Tuesday, August 3-4, 2026, in the Strait of Hormuz.

As the incident unfolded, UKMTO urged vessels transiting the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, while the UKMTO advisory also placed the strike about 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.
