UNGA trip, no Trump
Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly for a brief visit that Israeli media said was shortened to only a few hours, with no residence and no substantial political meetings on the sidelines.

Netanyahu’s plane landed at New York Stewart International Airport, about 106 kilometers from the UN headquarters, after Channel 13 reported that intelligence and security warnings pushed Israeli security officials to recommend reducing his stay and avoiding overnighting in New York.
Israeli media said Netanyahu’s schedule does not include a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, and a U.S. official said Netanyahu is not among the leaders the American president will meet on the margins of the General Assembly.
Netanyahu’s UN address is expected to last about 40 minutes, with Maariv saying Iran will top the agenda and Netanyahu will focus on Tehran’s efforts to rebuild its capabilities and explicitly address the possibility of regime collapse.
Dan Shapiro warned that “There is an unprecedented decline in Israel’s standing in the United States,” adding that it is “unprecedented even among Republicans” and that it is “hard to see Netanyahu as part of the solution to this situation.”
Adams feud and walkouts
New York Mayor Eric Adams described Netanyahu as a “war criminal and a horrific genocidal architect against the Palestinian people,” urging U.S. federal authorities to execute the ICC arrest warrant issued against him. Netanyahu attacked Adams, accusing him of supporting Hamas, and Netanyahu said he would “tell the truth about you” and “tell the truth about our heroic soldiers.” The UN General Assembly hall saw a mass departure of 77 delegations shortly before Netanyahu’s speech, and footage showed protesters chanting slogans as only a limited number of people remained.
Channel 14 called the walkout “a spit in Israel’s face,” while Yedioth Ahronoth called it “the dramatic protest,” as Israeli reports said representatives of 77 countries were absent during Netanyahu’s speech. MS NOW quoted Danny Danon saying, “It was important for the Prime Minister to arrive to New York, especially after Mayor Mamdani threatened to arrest him,” and Danon added that the prime minister would deliver his speech “like every year.”
Election pressure and legal risk
Netanyahu’s brief UN visit is unfolding as Israel heads toward general elections on October 27, and Anadolu Ajansı said polls show the opposition bloc leading Netanyahu’s coalition without a majority for either to form a government. Anadolu Ajansı said Netanyahu’s speech could be his last chance to improve Tel Aviv’s image before the international community and his personal image before his voters, and it described the visit as a “state of “diplomatic isolation.”” Jeredat al-Quds said Barak Sieri described the visit as “extremely unusual and very short,” and Sieri said it nearly lacks any high-value diplomatic meetings.
NBC News reported that Netanyahu said, “I am leaving tonight for New York in order to defend, from the U.N. podium, Israel and IDF soldiers,” and NBC News said Netanyahu’s target audience would likely be Israeli voters ahead of next month’s crucial elections. The sources also tied the trip to legal pressure, with Anadolu Ajansı saying Netanyahu has been sought since 2024 to appear before the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, and with the ICC arrest warrant described as including two warrants, one for Netanyahu and another for his former defense minister Yoav Gallant.
