Hebron attack triggers lockdown

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the lockdown of Hebron and the preparation of a general closure of the West Bank after an armed attack near Hebron left five injured, two of them in critical condition, four days before the Israeli legislative elections. Israeli forces shot the two attackers dead after a firefight lasting about twenty minutes, and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the large amount of ammunition found in their vehicle suggested a larger-scale attack was planned.

Netanyahu also canceled all Likud electoral events planned for Friday, as Israelis were to go to the polls on October 27. Hamas welcomed the attack as a “heroic operation,” while Itamar Ben-Gvir called for dismantling and demilitarizing the Palestinian Authority and warned, “We must not wait for an October 7 to happen in the West Bank.”

Full lockdown and military model

Netanyahu said he ordered security forces to immediately close Hebron and “prepare for a full lockdown across all of Judea and Samaria [the Israeli term for the West Bank] starting today,” after the Israeli military said it had killed two Palestinian gunmen. Netanyahu told troops that the Israeli forces “will enter the neighborhood from which the terrorists emerged, will evacuate the residents, move from house to house, and destroy the terrorists’ infrastructure,” as he described a broad operation in Judea and Samaria.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz said the “Jenin refugee camp model is heading to Hebron,” and he added that every neighborhood in Hebron from which the terrorists emerged would be evacuated of its residents. The BBC reported that Netanyahu said the army was preparing a large-scale military operation in the occupied West Bank, including forcing residents of a neighborhood in Hebron to leave their homes, after an attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three others.

Casualties, cordons, and arrests

Israeli sources said the shooting at the Furush al-Hawa area near Highway 35 left five people injured, with Magen David Adom noting that two were in critical condition, one had moderate wounds, and two had minor injuries. The Israeli army later confirmed that two soldiers, Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem, were killed, while three others were lightly injured, and it said it found a large amount of weapons and ammunition in the attackers’ vehicle.

Netanyahu ordered the IDF to cordon off Hebron, a city with more than 200,000 inhabitants, and he said the IDF would enter the neighborhoods from which the gunmen emerged, evacuate residents, go house-to-house, and dismantle the terror infrastructure. The IDF said it launched “offensive counterterrorism operations” in the Hebron area and that soldiers were operating inside the residences of the shooters and other suspects, while the Likud party canceled all campaign events for the rest of the day.
