Dublin parking lot killing
Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old New York Times executive, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and McKinsey’s parents-in-law, were arrested several minutes later and were facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder. Police said the shooting happened in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds, about 35 miles (56km) west of San Francisco, after a Dublin police sergeant saw a man lying on the ground.
Witnesses told KGO-TV in San Francisco that they heard a flurry of gunshots before seeing the victim on the ground, and witness Assad Razawi said, "I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody." Police have not disclosed any motive for the killing, and the elderly couple were being held at the Santa Rita jail.
Court dates and custody
Police said the suspects were booked into the Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder and that there were no outstanding suspects and no threat to public safety. The couple were due to appear in court to formally face the charges on Wednesday, while they were scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Dublin. CBS News Bay Area reported that witnesses said a man shot the victim and then handed the gun to the woman, and the witnesses said both were wearing masks.
NBC News said the shooting unfolded Saturday afternoon in the city of Dublin in Alameda County shortly after 3 p.m., and police said McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene. NBC News also said court documents indicated McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, were embroiled in a child custody battle when he died, and it said a judge granted Jang’s petition for a domestic violence temporary restraining order against McKinsey in October 2025.
Investigators seek answers
Police said there were no outstanding suspects and that the investigation into the shooting and what led up to it is ongoing, while officers said the circumstances that led to the shooting were under investigation. Dublin Sports Grounds was closed during the investigation and has since been reopened to the public, and police said there is no threat to public safety. Police have not disclosed any motive for his killing, and the elderly couple are being held at the Santa Rita jail.
The Times of India said two masked assailants approached McKinsey and they took turns unloading bullets into the victim, and it said the incident took place around 3pm on Saturday. The New York Post said the couple were booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder, and it said the booking records listed charges including first-degree murder and child endangerment.
