Shared Token Meter
OpenAI is preparing to merge ChatGPT and Codex usage limits so that Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share a common limit starting in December. OpenAI will count ChatGPT and Codex usage in tokens, and the company says how much of the shared quota a particular query uses will depend on the model chosen and the complexity of the task.
OpenAI tells subscribers that if tokens run out, they will have to wait for renewal, switch to a more expensive tariff, or purchase additional credits for features that support it. OpenAI also says it expects most subscribers will not have to wait longer for their limits to be restored, while dev.ua notes the company has not yet provided specific figures.
Chat and Work Merge
OpenAI is also preparing a test that will merge the Chat and Work tabs in ChatGPT into a single experience, with Codex remaining separate in the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI’s email describes the unified flow as a way to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, “all in one place,” while users bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website or create a presentation.
TechCrunch reports that OpenAI initially will make this experience available to select users for feedback before it is rolled out widely. OpenAI’s help center says the shared allowance across ChatGPT and Codex starts in December for Plus, Pro, and Business plans as OpenAI brings the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience.
Reset Risk for Codex
OpenAI says the shared token allocation will not affect most users, but the company warns that depending on usage and model, some people may need to wait for resets more frequently. OpenAI tells users they can check how much resource is left and when it will be restored in the Settings → Usage section, and the same screen will show combined remaining usage and reset times.
BleepingComputer reports that OpenAI says Unlimited Instant is included in the subscription and won’t count toward the shared usage limit. Startup Fortune frames the stakes for heavy users by pointing to how collapsing separate pools changes what a subscription buys when image generation and long autonomous coding work draw from the same meter.
