OpenAI Tests Labeled Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generation in the United States
OpenAI will test a visual ad format during ChatGPT's image generation in the United States. Ads will be clearly labeled as advertising and separated from generated images.

16 outlets told this the same way.
Ads during image creation
OpenAI said it will test a new visual ad format in ChatGPT during image generation in the United States later this month, with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI said the ads will be clearly labeled and remain separate from the image being created, and the company reiterated that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
OpenAI said the visual ads could use images to show product inspiration, how a product is used, or experiences associated with a service. OpenAI also said ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people every week, and it framed advertising as another way to monetize users who may not pay for a subscription.

Measurement and partner ecosystem
OpenAI said it is getting more serious about measuring ChatGPT ads, and it is adding tools that allow advertisers to measure whether ChatGPT ads lead to purchases or other conversions. OpenAI said it is integrating with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for conversion data, and it listed attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, and several others.
OpenAI said it is partnering with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability, and it said these safeguards are designed to prevent ads from appearing in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable conversations. OpenAI said independent partners will not get access to private user conversations while evaluating whether its advertising safeguards are working as intended.

What OpenAI says is at stake
OpenAI said the visual ad experiment is limited to the U.S. for now, and it positioned the rollout as part of a broader effort to monetize its 1.2 billion weekly users. OpenAI said the ads will be clearly labeled and remain separate from the image being created, and it said advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
OpenAI said it is developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, and it said the pilots aim to assess how its safeguards perform. OpenAI said it is exploring geo-based experiments with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to help advertisers understand the causal impact of ChatGPT Ads, while it described its work on incrementality as still in its early stages.
