Patreon laid off 93 employees, 20% of its workforce. Conte says layoffs are painful; core business remains strong amid AI-driven restructuring.

Patreon cuts 93 jobs
Patreon is laying off 20 percent of its staff, affecting 93 employees, as CEO Jack Conte said in a memo shared with employees on Thursday. Conte framed the restructuring as necessary to adjust the company’s cost structure while keeping Patreon’s core business “healthy and strong,” and he said the platform is changing “organizational structure and how we work.” In the same message, Conte wrote that Patreon is “flattening the organization, refocusing teams on our top priorities,” and he said the changes are meant to make the company “faster at adapting to change.”
“Patreon CEO Jack Conte doesn’t believe ‘AI replaces humans,’ but says the technology has ‘fundamentally transformed the tech industry.’”
The Verge reported that Conte wrote Patreon isn’t making the cuts because it believes AI replaces humans, but because AI has “fundamentally transformed the tech industry, including how we work, how we build products, how we communicate, and more.” Conte also said in the memo that “we’re flattening the organization” as part of a broader “workforce reduction” at the creator-focused monetization platform.

Severance and AI stance
Alongside the headcount reduction, Patreon told affected employees they would receive at least 16 weeks of severance pay, plus an additional week of pay for every full year worked at the company. Conte’s memo also described healthcare coverage through the end of the year for eligible employees and families, and it included a $1,500 stipend to replace their company laptops. In his memo, Conte insisted Patreon is not making the changes because it believes AI replaces humans, writing, “To be clear about the impact of AI on today’s decision: we are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans.”
The Verge added that Conte said the company is “100 percent embracing” AI tools internally, and it linked that stance to a warning that if Patreon does not fully embrace the tools “we, as a company, will be dead in three years.” Variety reported that Conte wrote the changes were “painful” but necessary, and he said Patreon needed to respond to “profound” market changes affecting how Patreon navigates the creator economy.

Creators, Cloudflare, and scrutiny
Patreon’s AI-related restructuring comes as the company has also moved to limit how companies can scrape creators’ work, partnering with Cloudflare to block crawlers from stealing creators’ work to train AI models. Engadget reported that Patreon adopted Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control tool to restrict what companies are able to scrape from creators’ pages, while continuing to allow “search crawlers” that “index pages, organize information, and direct users back to original sources like your Patreon.” Engadget also said Patreon would restrict “other crawlers” that “collect your work to help train AI models,” as the platform encourages users to offer free content and use Patreon as a form of social media.
“Other crawlers collect your work to help train AI models.”
In a separate thread of creator economy scrutiny, Variety noted that Patreon’s platform includes podcasts hosted by celebrities and entertainment creators, including Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, and it said Patreon’s podcasters generated $629 million in revenue last year. TechCrunch reported that the layoffs were Patreon’s largest since it cut 17% of its staff back in 2022, when it also closed its offices in Berlin and Dublin, and it tied the latest cuts to AI scraping becoming more sophisticated.
