Patriot Front Marchers Carry Confederate Flags in Washington During Trump’s Freedom 250

The marchers were photographed at the Eastern Market metro station and on public transit, and WTOP journalist Mitchell Miller posted on X a video of what he described as “a group of masked men gathered at Union Station,” saying they wore Confederate flags and called to “reclaim the country and drive out immigrants.”

The White House said its Freedom 250 effort included a “Salute to America and fireworks” on July 4 at the National Mall, and Trump was to deliver a speech as part of the day’s programming.

George Washington University’s extremism program describes Patriot Front as a white nationalist organization founded in 2017 after the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and NewsNation reported the group’s founder as Thomas Rousseau after splitting from Vanguard America following Charlottesville.

NewsNation also quoted Metropolitan Police Department language saying “[The Metropolitan Police Department] recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views and remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors,” as local authorities said they were monitoring the demonstration.

The Hill reported that masked demonstrators were seen marching through Washington, D.C.’s Eastern Market neighborhood on Saturday as the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary of independence, with members dressed in khakis and white face coverings and carrying American, Confederate, and Patriot Front-insignia flags.

Videos posted on social media showed the marchers chanting “Life, liberty, victory!” and “Reclaim America!” as they proceeded through the city, and The Hill said a Metropolitan Police Department official told it MPD was tracking “First Amendment activities” that occurred Saturday morning in Eastern Market.

The Hill also described a counter-protest where a man using a bullhorn shouted, “Every single one of you justifies the f-ing right to abortion,” at the group as it marched through the nation’s capital.

Spectrum News reported that the white supremacist group Patriot Front marched on the Capitol on Saturday, and it cited a Washington Post description of “hundreds of uniformed members of what appeared to be Patriot Front” marching toward the Capitol while chanting “Reclaim America!”

Spectrum News added that the Metropolitan Police Department told it it “is tracking First Amendment activities that occurred this morning in the Eastern Market neighborhood,” and that MPD “remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors.”

WCIV reported that approximately 400 members of Patriot Front participated in the march through downtown Washington, D.C., during Independence Day festivities that drew thousands of visitors for parades, concerts, fireworks, and events commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial.

WCIV said police monitored the march as it passed through downtown and that police said the group’s presence did not result in any arrests or reported confrontations.

Forbes reported that the group consisted of roughly 700 people, citing The New York Times, and said the demonstrators left the city before 11 a.m. EDT, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Forbes also quoted Thomas Rousseau saying Saturday, “The only way to secure our existence is to become all that we aspire to be,” and it quoted another Rousseau line about “Our national independence was seized by a natural aristocracy of our people, the best of our Anglo-Saxon blood.”

The Guardian reported that members chanted “Life, liberty, victory!” and “Reclaim America!” during the Saturday demonstration, and it quoted the Metropolitan police department saying it was “tracking first amendment activities that occurred this morning in the Eastern Market neighborhood” while adding that MPD “recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views.”
