Pentagon releases UFO files
The Pentagon began releasing declassified UFO-related files on Friday, May 8, including a tranche of 161 files posted online on a Department of Defense website, with more set to be released “on a rolling basis.”
“Trump finally declassifies the Pentagon's secret files on UFO sightings”
The BBC said the documents were declassified and posted online on Friday at the direction of President Donald Trump, who had earlier said he would release them “based on the tremendous interest shown”.

In one Pentagon-described video from U.S. Central Command, officials wrote that a mission report “described the UAP as consisting of a 'misshapen and uneven ball of white light,'” and reported a “light/glare halo effect” at the top of the FMV feed.
In another Pentagon-described video from U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, officials wrote the infrared sensor observation resembled “a football-shaped body with three radial projections,” including one oriented vertically and two oriented downward at a 45-degree angle.
The Pentagon also posted a disclaimer that “Readers should not interpret any part of this description as reflecting an analytical judgment, investigative conclusion, or factual determination.”
Lawmakers and skeptics react
ABC News reported that many of the reported sightings in the newly released files were clustered near active military operations, and it said the Pentagon described the incidents as posing “no apparent threat.”
ABC News also quoted Sean Kirkpatrick, the former head of AARO, warning that “without any analysis or context, will only serve to fuel more speculation, conspiracy and arm-chair pseudoscience.”

The BBC described how Congressman Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, welcomed the release as a “great start” in a post on X.
The BBC also reported that Republican Anna Paulina Luna called the disclosure “a massive first step in the right direction,” while former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said, “I'm so sick of the 'look at the shiny object' propaganda.”
In the Pentagon’s own statement carried by ABC News, the department said, “The American people can now access the federal government's declassified UAP files instantly.”
What’s at stake next
The Pentagon said it would release more materials “on a rolling basis,” and Space reported that “tranches posted every few weeks” would follow as new items are discovered and declassified.
“Hovering objects and flashing lights: what we learned from UFO documents released by the Pentagon The tranche of never-before-seen documents released by the Pentagon on UFOs includes descriptions of reported sightings - by civilians on Earth and by astronauts on the Moon”
NBC News said the files are being housed on a dedicated government site, https://www.war.gov/UFO/, and it described the collection as including more than 160 files detailing more than 400 incidents.
The Guardian reported that the Pentagon told the public it “can ultimately make up their own minds about the information contained in these files,” while also describing Friday’s release as an “initial release” and saying “Additional files will be released by the Department of War on a rolling basis.”
NBC News said the documents include incidents from the Apollo 11, Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 moon missions, including Buzz Aldrin’s 1969 debrief where he said he saw “what appeared to be a fairly bright light source which we tentatively ascribed to a possible laser.”
The Guardian also said the Pentagon’s accompanying caption stated “there is no consensus about the nature of the anomaly” and that a new, preliminary analysis indicated it could be a “physical object,” leaving the public-facing record open to further interpretation as more files arrive.
