Lamborghini crash charges
Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation after crashing his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire, near Minley Interchange, on 28 May 2026.
“Raheem Sterling will appear in court next month”
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the charges followed a single-vehicle collision on the M3 southbound with no other vehicles involved and no injuries reported.
The BBC reported that Sterling will appear in court next month, and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said he is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.
The Guardian said Sterling is accused of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen, and it added that he is from Berkshire and is currently without a club.
Police statement and bail
The BBC said Sterling was arrested and then released on bail pending further enquiries after the crash on the morning of Thursday, 28 May.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary told the BBC that "Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen."
The BBC also reported that police suspected Sterling of "driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs," but that has not been included in the charges.
A source close to Sterling told BBC Sport in May that there was "no proof" of drugs in his system, and the BBC said the source added Sterling had been made to "feel worthless" and "forgotten about" in recent years.
Career context and next steps
The Guardian said Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for England, helping Gareth Southgate’s side reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.
“Sterling is now without a club”
It also said Sterling came through the academy at QPR before joining Liverpool, then moved to Manchester City in 2015 where he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup, before leaving for Chelsea in 2022 and spending 2024-25 on loan at Arsenal.
The Guardian added that after leaving Stamford Bridge, he joined the Dutch club Feyenoord on a short-term deal until the end of last season and is now without a club.
The BBC said Sterling joined Feyenoord in February on a short-term contract after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent, and it noted that Chelsea paid £47.5m to sign Sterling from Manchester City in 2022.
