Rivian buys world-model startup
Rivian Automotive, Inc. completed its acquisition of Third Dimension AI, Inc. on October 22, 2026, bringing a 15-person U.K. team into Rivian’s autonomy and AI organization. Rivian said Third Dimension AI builds what the industry calls world models that convert images and video into 3D environments a developer can control.
James Philbin led the receiving autonomy and AI team, and Rivian said the technology will support synthetic-data generation and full-world simulation for its driver-assistance and self-driving systems. Tolga Kart, Third Dimension AI’s CEO, said the company’s mission had been to power the next generation of embodied AI and autonomous systems, and he framed the move as a way to deploy the simulation technology at a larger scale.
Simulation for rare driving
Rivian planned to use Third Dimension AI’s AI to recreate the physical world so it could accelerate the development and testing of driver-assistance systems and an autonomous driving system for robotaxis Rivian plans to supply to Uber. Philbin said Rivian receives more than 400,000 data sequences daily from customer vehicles whose owners have allowed data transmission from external cameras, and he tied the acquisition to validation and the sim-to-real gap.
Kart described a gap between virtual worlds and actual roads, and he said Third Dimension’s approach aims to make virtual environments match the real world better by applying AI to images and videos. Philbin said the technology would let Rivian recreate challenging driving situations by moving cameras, shifting other agents, and changing lighting or weather conditions, while still using real scenarios made simulatable.
Funding, founders, and next steps
Third Dimension AI was founded in 2024 by CEO Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokólski, and the company raised $7 million in seed funding from Abstract Ventures, MVP, Soma Capital, and Solari Capital. TechCrunch said Rivian was not getting into gaming, even though Third Dimension’s technology was built to speed up video game development, and it said the founders would focus on automated driving under Rivian.
Rivian said it would absorb the 15-person team into its autonomy and AI team led by James Philbin, and the acquisition was described as a way to expand Rivian’s AI hub in London. TechCrunch said Rivian offers “Universal Hands-Free” driving software and planned, by the end of the year, to release a version that can handle the entire drive through surface streets and highways without touching the wheel, while still requiring the driver to supervise and be ready to take over.
