The missing-crew headlines cover separate Bulgarian and Romanian incidents, so their figures should not be treated as a single toll. Other headlines focus on official responses or regional spillover, while reports on the Romanian tankers differ by vessel and stage of the investigation.

Missing crews across separate incidents

Daily Mirror and BBC foreground missing Wine Trader crew, as do Euronews and Straits Times with a later lower figure; NBC covers the earlier Bulgarian sinking. These figures concern different incidents or updates. Daily Mirror explicitly republishes BBC reporting, so the five outlet appearances are not five independent casualty counts.

Official security responses

4 outlets · 4 headlines

Ars Technica discusses possible counter-drone redeployment; BBC and New York Times report Bulgaria summoning Russia's ambassador; Stars and Stripes reports requests for NATO help. These predominantly follow the Bulgarian incidents and should not be presented as responses solely to the later Wine Trader fire.

Wider regional attack pattern

Al Jazeera uses rising attacks, DW describes spillover and Türkiye Today says attacks spread. Their coverage spans different ships and dates. The Hindu's latest incident wording alone does not establish widening scope; neither a tanker fire nor an investigation alone demonstrates who was responsible.

Wine Trader, missing crew

Romanian authorities said the San Marino-flagged Wine Trader caught fire off Romania’s coast in the Black Sea, and naval authorities said eight of 12 crew members were missing after a drone attack left the tanker ablaze.

The Wine Trader reported blasts and a fire at about 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT) while it was 13 nautical miles (24km) east of the mouth of the River Danube at Sulina, and Romanian President Nicușor Dan later confirmed it was struck by drones.

Romanian authorities said two Black Hawk helicopters and two rescue boats were deployed, and the priority was to reach the four crew members confirmed to be alive while ensuring the safety of rescue teams with very high waves.

Romania’s president said, "We want to have all the information about what happened, but there will be a response from the Romanian state," as leaders of Romania and Bulgaria prepared to discuss whether Article 4 of the Nato treaty should be invoked.

Ukraine directly blamed Russia for earlier attacks on civilian vessels in the western side of the Black Sea, and the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the Black Sea was becoming "another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. This is unacceptable".

NATO response and rival claims

Romania and Bulgaria were due to discuss whether Article 4 of the Nato treaty should be invoked, and the BBC said the treaty allows any member of the military alliance to request consultations with its allies if it believes its territorial integrity or security is threatened.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan said, "We want to have all the information about what happened, but there will be a response from the Romanian state," and he said discussions would focus on operational requirements, including additional equipment to protect shipping in the area.

Bulgaria said it suspected Russia was behind the Tuesday drone attack that left 11 crew members missing after one merchant ship sank, and Bulgaria summoned the country’s envoy.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rumen Radev told Parliament, "There is no logic in Ukraine attacking its own ships and crews, given that the outcome of all these attacks favors Russia — and indeed, the logic points in that direction. The problem is that we cannot prove it," as he said the Russian ambassador was summoned to Sofia.

The AP reported that the Russian ambassador said she did not have any information from the Russian defense ministry but did not rule out the possibility that "these attacks represent a provocation by a third party."

Black Sea shipping risks

Euronews reported that Romania said seven people were missing after a fire broke out on the Wine Trader on Thursday morning, and Romania’s president warned, "there will surely be a reaction." Euronews said the Romanian Naval Authority stated that "Five of the sailors on board the Wine Trader have been rescued, a further seven people are still missing," and it said a search and rescue operation was underway involving a vessel and a helicopter. Euronews said Romania’s president Nicusor Dan reacted as he arrived for an EU summit in Brussels, saying, "we want to gather all the data about what happened exactly, but there will surely be a reaction," and he said Romania and Bulgaria would meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later on Thursday.

The BBC said the west coast of the Black Sea had seen a spate of drone attacks, and it said a swarm of Russian drones was detected overnight near Ukraine’s Snake Island. The BBC said the incidents came as Turkey called on both Russia and Ukraine to halt attacks in the Black Sea, and it said Moscow repeatedly rejected calls by the US and Europe for a naval ceasefire in the Black Sea, blaming Ukraine for attacking Russian merchant ships in the area.
